Description

1973 Porsche 911S Coupe
s/n 9113300412 engine no. 6330629
Gemini Blue with Black Leather Interior

Early 911’s embody a combination that is rare among collector cars today. They have unparalleled drivability and usability, especially when compared with other cars of the same vintage, but are also wholly evocative of a different era. There is a certain wholeness, cohesiveness, agility, and communicativeness that is only evident when they are driven, and it is no surprise that they have a fanatical following. Until recently, however, they were just used cars, which makes finding genuinely solid examples which have been continuously cared throughout the car’s life very difficult today. All early 911’s have appreciated tremendously in recent years, with good solid cars seeing especially significant increases in value. The late cars (1972 and 1973), which are fitted with 2.4 liter engines, are very desirable, and are generally regarded to be the ultimate development of the original ‘long hood` 911. The 911S was the top of the 911 range (other than the RS) featuring the most sporting equipment and the most powerful engine.

This particular car is a 2-owner California car from new. It was sold new at Niello in Sacramento, and remained with its original owner until 2008 or so. The original maintenance booklet with this car’s serial number and the original owner’s name is included with the car, as are registration slips with his name on them, the most recent of which is December 2007-December 2008. The engine is the matching numbers original unit. The car remains on its original six digit blue license plates, and is complete with book set and tools. The car is well optioned and desirably finished in Gemini blue with black leather interior. The car has sport seats, air conditioning (which blows cold!), through the grille fog lamps, and Blaupunkt radio (a later one is currently installed, and the original is included). The car has never been restored, merely kept up over the years.

The car is in excellent cosmetic condition. It has been repainted in its original color to high standards, and the paint is excellent, with only a few small blemishes. The body panels are very straight and display great fit and gaps. The correct trim is all present and very nice, and the chrome appears to be original and is excellent considering this, with no significant pitting in evidence, and only light scratches. The wheels are excellent as well, as are the lenses, lights, and other glass. Other than the windscreen seal, the rubber appears to be original and is showing its age. There was no corrosion noted other than one small spot on the inside of the trunk lid, near the leading edge. It is not visible from the exterior of the car.

The interior also appears to be original and is excellent. The dashboard is free of cracking, discoloration, and warping, and the instruments and controls are all in fine shape. The carpets appear to be original and are very nice, and the leather upholstery also appears to be original. Other than a small hole in the driver’s bolster, the leather is excellent. The door panels, rear seats, parcel shelf, visors and headliner are all excellent as well and are of the correct type, suggesting that they too are original. The door panels are a bit misshapen, as is often the case on these cars. The steering wheel is excellent.

The engine compartment and trunk both appear to be unrestored and are quite correct in appearance. The engine compartment is very clean and retains the correct to the S red fan shroud. The full intake equipment is also in place and the overall impression is of an unmolested properly cared for car. The trunk conveys a similar impression, with the full carpet set in place, with a few holes in the carpets near the batteries. The spare fuchs alloy wheel is in place, mounted with a Michelin XWX tire. The battery box and suspension pan are excellent. The undercarriage has been detailed and is extremely nice. The chassis was repainted and is just about spotless, and there were no noted signs of accident damage or corrosion, past or present.

The car runs and drives well. The motor starts easily and the gearbox is excellent. The steering is communicative and light in the way that has made the 911 famous. The chassis is quiet, with no noted rattles and a feeling of solidity that is very satisfying.

This is an outstanding opportunity to acquire a wonderful survivor 911, in many ways the Holy Grail of what Porsche enthusiasts seek. This car is a desirable 911S from the last year of the long hoods, and is well-optioned in great colors. Add in great its excellent California history from new and superb original condition, and this car is the perfect embodiment of a collector caliber early 911. It is complete with tools and original manual pack with service booklet, owner’s manual, and dealer directory.
