Description

1973 Porsche 911E
s/n 9113201230, Engine no. *6231937*
Tangerine with Tan Leather Interior

When the 911 first appeared on American soil, it did not take long for these potent and beautiful cars to become the standard for excellence in affordable sports cars. Their unparalleled drivability, ease of use, and simple elegance defied former “fussy” sports car paradigms. Their functional looks, purposeful interiors and road going agility led to a fanatical following, one that thrives today particularly among enthusiast collectors. For many years, 911s remained excellent used cars, but finding genuine uncompromised examples has become challenging. The 911E sold in the United States with MFI (mechanical fuel injection) coupled with the stout 2.4 liter engine. The 911E offered more power and drivability than the 911T, proving to be a reliable alternative to the more costly 911S. Most early 911s have appreciated in recent years and the late cars (1972 and 1973), are considered the ultimate development of the 'long hood' 911. Surprisingly only 1366 911E coupes were built for 1973, making it a rare part of the 911 lineage.

This handsome car, currently displaying attractive original colors, matching numbers engine, and accompanied by service records dating back to 1977, was delivered to the first owner, Richard Campbell of Campbell Heating and Cooling, Rochetster NY. Mr. Campbell owned and serviced the car regularly per records on file including ownership registration cards dating back to 1974. Campbell sold the car in 1987 to Lee Hasiuk, also of Rochester, NY (roughly 35,000 miles recorded at that time). Hasiuk owned the car until 2000, when he sold it to Andrew Helgeson (56,000 miles recorded). Both Helgeson and Hasiuk were thoughtful enthusiasts who had the car properly serviced and maintained as needed. In 2004 (With 69,000 miles on the engine), Helgeson had the engine and transmission removed and rebuilt, along with several other services including a new flywheel, valve adjustment, injection pump rebuild, and suspension work. A careful glass-out repaint was also performed in 2005, which included correct Mid America sourced window trim, new rear glass, rubber, moldings as needed, new trunk liner, a new headliner, and dozens of other trim parts. The current owner further refined the car a decade later, with work performed in 2015 including removing the engine and transmission and refinishing the components to a proper cosmetic and mechanical factory standard. At this time, the interior was also redone with Buckskin Leather and cloth interior. The Porsche Certificate of Authenticity indicates that this car was originally delivered in Tangerine/23 with Beige/Tan Leatherette/31, to a US buyer with US equipment, Comfort Equipment, and Dunlop Tires. The certificate further confirms the engine and transmission are the matching numbers examples to this example.

Currently this 911E presents very nicely having traveled 84,195 miles, which are believe to be original based on the receipts and ownership documents provided. The original owner retained this very sound original example for 14 years, which was transferred to two owners who further maintained the integrity of the car without significant modifications. The current owner has continued this tradition of care leading up to the condition represented today. The paint remains glossy throughout and has nice depth to it. The fit and general finish is quite nice overall with good panel fit to the hood, doors, and deck lid. Even the bottom of the split front valance is very nicely finished. The rocker panel trim is polished properly and has no significant chips or damage. The hood, deck, and doors close and open easily both from the outside and inside, revealing very nice finishes on the inside surfaces, properly trimmed gaskets and factory decals, and correct latches with proper finishes. Overall condition of the lighting, lenses, emblems, and trim is very good to excellent with very nice finish to the recently refinished wheels, retaining unmarked rim edges. A beautiful pair of chrome domed fog lamps are tastefully mounted above the intake vents. The car sits slightly lowered, on Yokohama tires, with dual exit exhaust pipes, giving the car a purposeful, hunkered down stance, echoing the racing lineage of these distinct 911 series cars.

The interior has been very nicely restored with newly covered seats featuring Buckskin Leather and cloth inserts, correct style carpet, recent headliner, and a new dash. The original door panels were slightly modified to allow for interior leather strap door-pulls, again a nice racing homage detail. All replacement materials used were selected with originality and quality in mind. The dashboard is very clean and well detailed. All instrumentation appears to be working with the exception of the clock. Dial faces are clean, clear, and needles are bright orange. Switches, handles and trim throughout the interior remain in very good condition as well. Glass throughout the car is very nice as are the rubber trim, glass stripping, and sill plates.

The engine compartment is in excellent condition, having been cosmetically and mechanically freshened less than two years ago. The finishes are correct with proper use of factory type clamps, hardware, and appropriate heat-coated paints as needed. The engine compartment has also been very nicely detailed and finished to a high level cosmetically, using correct factory decals and labels, and proper coatings. The undercarriage is as you might expect from a driver level car, with no significant damage to the floor or support structure. However, during the engine out refresh, the exhaust system, engine and transmission castings, mufflers, and select suspension parts were all properly treated to correct finishes. These finishes are very well preserved and speak highly of the level of detail the car has been afforded during the current ownership.

Stepping into the car, the overall look and feel is quite nice. The handsome interior feels just right. The key ignites the 2.4 liter engine as it barks to life with that distinctive Porsche sound. The motor has been properly dialed in and continually serviced. First gear is easily engaged as the car smoothly opens up and reveals a very confident presence. Moving through the gears, there is no hesitation as power comes on strong, continually. Braking is swift and effective, while the suspension has a taut feel, well matched to the balanced steering. Slow sweeping corners are delightful symphonies of engine and motion, unique only to driving a properly serviced Porsche 911.

Records accompanying the car include receipts for work done on the engine, transmission, and various mechanical components, as well as detailed records and hand written notes from previous owners, and a factory owner’s manual. Also included with the car is the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity confirming this as a matching numbers, original Tangerine Porsche 911E, as well as the original “cookie cutter” wheels.

This authentic matching numbers 911E features recent restoration work and thoughtful care over the past 40+ years of dedicated ownership. The beautiful and rare color combination and delightful cosmetics makes this rare 911E a fun and desirable example ready for any enthusiast to drive and enjoy.
