Description

1973 Porsche 911E Targa
s/n 9113210249 engine no. 6230536
Gemini Blue with Black Leather Interior

Early 911’s embody a combination that is rare among collector cars today. They have unparalleled drivability and usability, especially when compared with other cars of the same vintage, but are also wholly evocative of a different era. There is a certain wholeness, cohesiveness, agility, and communicativeness that is only evident when they are driven, and it is no surprise that they have a fanatical following. For many years, however, they were just used cars, which makes finding genuinely solid examples which have been continuously cared throughout the car’s life very difficult today. All early 911’s have appreciated tremendously in recent years, with good solid cars seeing especially significant increases in value. The late cars (1972 and 1973), which are fitted with 2.4 liter engines, are very desirable, and are generally regarded to be the ultimate development of the original ‘long hood’ 911. The 911E was the middle model of the 911 line, featuring mechanical fuel injection for more power and drivability than the 911T, but a less peaky motor than the 911S. Indeed, despite a slight power disadvantage, the 911E was actually faster to 60mph than the 911S, thanks to its more flexible power delivery. The Targa was a unique and typically Porsche solution to the then current conception that convertibles would be legislated out of existence for the all important US market. They were able to take this inconvenient possibility and devise a functional and unusual solution that would eventually become iconic. With its heated glass rear window, fixed rollover hoop, and folding top that fit in the trunk, the Targa was a more practical, safer, and less disagreeable way to enjoy open air motoring.

This particular car is a lovely matching-numbers long time California car that retains its 6-digit blue license plates. It belonged to a long term owner near San Diego for many years, before being acquired by its current owner, who has had the car for approximately ten years. He reports that the indicated mileage of 99,000 is believed to be from new. He had the car repainted when he first purchased it, and the paint remains very nice. The car comes with a certificate of authenticity, confirming that it is matching numbers and listing the following options: US Equipment, Air Conditioner, Green Tinted Glass, Light Metal Wheels, Comfort Package, Manual Antenna and Noise Suppression, Dunlop Tires. Additionally, the car has had the front bumperettes removed, and leather sport seats added. Other equipment includes European H4 headlamps, through grille fog lamps, and European rear lenses.

The car is in excellent condition, with a very good quality paint job over nice straight and solid panels. The paint is in very good shape, with only a few small blemishes such as the occasional chip, but no road rash on the front of the car. The trim and chrome are very nice throughout, as are the wheels and tires, which are excellent Fuchs with Michelin XWX tires. The lights and glazing are excellent throughout, including the rare and desirable fog lamps.

The interior is very nice, being substantially original and very well-preserved. The seats are not original, but are instead like new leather sport seats. The carpets are in excellent order, as are the switches and controls. The dashboard has a few cracks in it, between the speaker grille and the defroster vent, and near the clock. The door panels are in good condition.

The engine and trunk are original and well-preserved in appearance. The engine retains its original type air conditioning compressor, as well as its correct green fan shroud. The engine is fairly clean with no untoward components or signs of problems, and has an honest feel of an older well-cared for car. The trunk is solid throughout and the car has its tool roll with tools, as well as its manuals. The undercarriage is very clean and solid, and has been detailed.
This is a great opportunity to acquire an extremely solid matching-numbers Targa in great condition. Finished in a desirable color combination, the car runs and drives great, and is well-equipped with sport seats, AC, fog lamps, and European lighting. Additionally, it is complete with tool roll with tools (though there is no spare), as well as books.
