Description

1973 Porsche 911S 2.4-Liter Coupe
S/n 9113301070, Engine no. 6331707
Light Ivory with Black Interior with Houndstooth Inserts

Early 911s embody a combination that is rare among collector cars today. They have unparalleled drivability and usability, especially when compared with other cars of the same vintage, but are also wholly evocative of a different era. There is a wholeness, cohesiveness, agility, and communicativeness that is only evident when they are driven, and it is no surprise that they have a fanatical following. For many years, however, they were just used cars, which makes finding genuinely solid and unmolested examples difficult today. All early 911s have appreciated tremendously in recent years, with good solid cars seeing especially significant increases in value. The late cars (1972 and 1973), which are fitted with 2.4 liter engines, are very desirable, and are generally regarded to be the ultimate development of the original 'long hood' 911. The 911S was the top of the 911 range (other than the RS) featuring the most sporting equipment and the most powerful engine.

This particular car is from the last year of production and is a nicely restored matching numbers example. The included Certificate of Authenticity shows that the car was originally delivered to the United States finished in light ivory with black interior and fitted with Blaupunkt radio and power windows. Although the early history of the car is largely unknown, it is believed to have been a part of a large Porsche collection in Iowa for several decades before passing through the hands of several other collectors. It received a repaint in the original color in the late 2000s, as well as some mechanical refurbishment.

The car makes a strong cosmetic impression with a nice repaint over straight panels. The fit is generally very good throughout and the paint has few blemishes, including a few small cracks in the rain gutters and some chips which have been touched up. The bright trim appears to be original and is excellent considering this, with light oxidation and a few scratches. The wheels are excellent as are the lights. The car has been fitted with H4 headlamps.

The interior is excellent overall with desirable houndstooth sport seats which show virtually no wear. The carpets have been recently replaced while the dashboard, instruments, and switches appear to be in excellent unrestored condition. There is one very small crack in the dashboard between the speaker grille and defroster vent. The door panels are very nice as is the headliner.

The engine compartment is tidy and it appears that the car has covered relatively little mileage since the engine was removed and refurbished. SSI heat exchangers have been fitted and the general presentation is in keeping with a high end driver. The fuse block cover on the left side is missing. The trunk has new carpet and beneath the carpet, it appears that the structure was refinished and is in extremely nice condition. A reproduction tool roll with tools is included with the car, along with original owner’s manual.

The car is a pleasure to drive. The engine is very well tuned and pulls strongly throughout the rev range. The fuel injection is properly set up and the hand throttle functions correctly. The steering is tight and wonderfully communicative while the chassis has the correct blend of compliance and precision. The transmission works very well, with excellent synchromesh on all gears, warm or cold. All in all, the experience is coherent and an absolute pleasure, reminding the driver why these cars are so sought after today.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire and unmodified, great-driving, matching-numbers 911S from the last year of production. Finished in its original color combination, the car is attractive but not so nice to discourage being driven, and comes with tools, owner’s manual, and Certificate of Authenticity. The fuel injection system was just comprehensively tuned and the car is ready to enjoy.
