Description

1976 Porsche 930 Turbo Carrera
s/n 9306800427, Engine no. *6860440*
Anthracite Metallic with Black Leather Interior

When the Porsche 930 Turbo was unveiled at the Paris Auto Show in 1974, it was nothing short of earth-shattering, instantly becoming the performance leader of the 911 line. After massive success pioneering the use of turbochargers during the first half of the 1970s, both in Can Am with the 917 and for road racing in the 911, Porsche had proven it could bring a reliable and capable turbocharged road car to market. By 1975 the 930 came to market, making it the fastest production car available in Germany.

In 1976 the first production 930 was sold in North America, with the very early units featuring ‘Turbo Carrera’ emblems on the engine lid. The combined performance and luxury made the 930 one of the most desirable and expensive Porsches ever sold. Contemporary press gushed about the effortless acceleration, coupled with deceptive composure - an attribute that seemed positively alien in a period when few drivers had experienced turbocharged cars. The car's massive performance, by contemporary standards, made it a genuine contender for supercar status. For the first time, the 930 Turbo quickly positioned Porsche in a different category than it had previously occupied. The 930 became iconic in the eyes of performance car enthusiasts, youthful dreamers, and professionals with the means to purchase these powerful and capable flagship sports cars.

In many ways, the production 930 was diametrically opposed to Porsche's previous high performance 911, the Carrera RS. The earlier RS was a raw and elemental homologated racecar adapted for the road. And while the 930 was a luxurious and refined car meant to effortlessly cover great distances at high speeds, competition prepared Porsche Turbos were also cleaning up on the racetrack. The 930 design was also stunning. The lurid fender flares and rear spoiler gave the car a distinctive, purposeful, and aggressive presence that would be immortalized in posters, model cars, and movies. The early series 930 was equipped with a single turbocharged, non-intercooled 3.0 liter air-cooled flat six engine capable of 256hp. Although relatively affordable and overlooked by collectors for many years, early 930s have emerged as collectible cars thanks to their iconic styling, innovative technology, and direct connection to many of Porsche's most successful race cars.

This particular car (9306800427) is an early 1976 US market car built in April of 1976. Sold originally in California where it has remained all its life sharing very few owners, this 930 was delivered with Sport Seats, 1.5PS starter, an Electric Sunroof, Air Conditioning, Pirelli Tires, and Equipment for California. According to the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this 930 was special ordered with “Metallic Paint to Sample/99” Anthrazit Grey. The father of the current owner purchased the car in 1990. At that time it had amassed 50,000 miles. Over the course of his ownership (later transferred to his son), they documented all miles, smog checks, and service (generally performed by specialists) as needed from 1990-2017. In 1990, the car was involved in a road accident damaging the lower parts of the car, necessitating the replacement of the left front fender, rocker panels, and wheels. Additionally, the fuel tank, mufflers, and heat exchangers were also replaced, and the car was mostly repainted. Prior to the current owners use, the car also was properly serviced from purchase in 1986, having accumulated just 10,000 miles at that time. Today, with just 66,800 miles, this 930 retains its matching-numbers engine and transmission.

Cosmetically, the car presents well as a largely original example with tidy cosmetics. The car was repainted in 1990 to a good standard but shows evidence of poor preparation in a few places. The overall gloss of the paint is very nice and presents well, however there are a few chips and scratches around the car, some scuff marks, and upon close examination, some areas reveal ripples and prep marks. The body is straight and solid with good panel fit and smooth operation of the doors, hood, and engine lid. The engine lid sits slightly proud of the rear, likely due to newer rubber along the bottom seal. The trim and badges are in nice shape, as are the lights and glass. The windscreen and glass appear in good condition, as does the black anodized trim, showing some minor fading. The rubber is generally in good shape aside from some aging at the sunroof seal and a few minor areas. The black trailing edge of the rear wing surround remains in very nice condition. The wheels are in excellent shape and wear tires with reasonable tread remaining for general use.

The interior remains largely in original condition with good overall presentation, having been properly cared for, but revealing honest use over the past 40 years. The leather on the sports seats remains supple and shows minor wear to the piping, though still retaining good support. The carpets are in nice condition, however the rear seatback carpeting is faded, evident when folded down. The dashboard is nicely preserved, but exhibits some warping on the top surface, and glove box door, while the steering wheel is in nice condition, but will need partial stitching along the upper inner rim. The gauges and switches are correct and remain vividly colored with excellent needle color, exhibiting correct operation when the car is in use. The door panels are in very good condition with nice lower carpeting as well. The correct off white headliner has some gentle yellowing and the sun visors, while having lost much of their rigid inner structure, remain complete. The condition and integrity of the interior supports the reported and documented miles of this rare early 930.

Opening the engine compartment, one pauses to read the rare black anodized Turbo Carrera emblem, available only on early 1976 US delivered models. The engine and compartment appears unmodified and has not been restored. The engine and components show signs of use, but overall remains mercifully undisturbed, a rarity among 930s, particularly early 3.0 liter examples. The trunk is also pleasingly tidy with correct carpeting. The spare is date coded February 1976 and the jack and tool roll are present with the car. The underside is structurally solid and largely original, but not overly detailed.

The car runs and drives well, starting easily and running smoothly at idle. The clutch engages smoothly and positively, taking up easily without a lot of pedal pressure. The gearbox has good synchromesh and linkage, though second gear synchro exhibits normal wear. The steering has the inimitable light and communicative 911 feel and the chassis and suspension are tight and reassuring. Braking is quite good with excellent pedal pressure. Both the driving experience and interior condition are consistent with a properly enjoyed car, still offering a great deal of pleasure for the next fortunate owner. The car is offered with copious records showing service and repairs dating back to 1986, annual CA emissions records with mileage reporting back to 1991, owners manual, Porsche COA, and spare parts including - original rear wiper motor and wiper blade arm, 2 replacement pedal pads, a new set of 20 black lugnuts, the original equalizer, the box for the current radio, and a set of replacement door seals.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire one of the first 930 models delivered to the US market. Finished in its unique and special order Anthracite Grey and desirably equipped with sport seats, sunroof, and air conditioning, this capable Turbo Carrera example is ready for use and enjoyment in all 50 states including California, where it is currently titled and registered for road use. Among the finest performance cars ever envisioned, the Porsche Turbo remains the iconic sports car for anyone who enjoys innovative engineering, brave design, and premier performance, even when measured against modern offerings.
