Description

1976 Porsche Carrera 3.0 s/n 9116600154 motor no. 6660198. Metallic Gold with Black Leather An extremely rare sight in the United States, the Carrera 3.0 is a bright spot in what is generally considered to be the low point (if such a thing exists) in 911 history. When the US-market 911S struggled along to 60mph in a leisurely 8.5 seconds and was strangled by new-fangled and troublesome early smog equipment, the Carrera 3.0 was the car that US Porsche enthusiasts pined for. Conceived as the ultimate naturally aspirated 911, the Carrera 3.0 replaced the illustrious Carrera 2.7. The specification was comprehensive, with the most exciting part being the 3.0 litre fuel-injected motor, which shared the crankcase with the Turbo motor. It produced a full 50hp more than the US spec 911S and 30hp more than the later SC, which is the closest thing to the Carrera 3.0 that we ever received here. The spec also included flared wheel arches to accommodate larger Fuchs, and numerous other niceties and equipment. Today, the Carrera 3.0 remains an underappreciated and rare car, especially in the US, and is a considerably more unique alternative to an SC. This particular car was purchased in Germany in 1984 and then imported through Wilmington, Delaware. The car was federalized with US bumpers etc. and received an EPA release, and all paperwork is included. Also included is a formidable paper trail since the time of importation, including service records, receipts for parts, and even smog inspections. Over the years, many upgrades and modifications have been fitted, all of which are oriented towards making the car a serious piece of driving equipment. The suspension has been upgraded with 28mm front and 21mm rear torsion bars, in addition to adjustable rear spring plates. A front strut tower bar has also been installed, in addition to 7 and 8-inch Fuchs with polished rims and color crests. Stainless steel oil and brake lines have also been fitted, including Aeroquip fittings at the oil cooler. An ignition box and coil by MSD have also been fitted, in addition to a K&N air filter and a full B&B exhaust system (heat exchangers and muffler). The car is not fitted with catalytic converters and will thus not pass California smog and cannot be registered for road use, so we are offering this as a 49-state car. The car also has an 11-blade cooling fan (the original 5-blade unit is included) and an Optima Redtop battery. The interior has been upgraded with Momo shift knob, steering wheel, and aluminum pedals, as well as a short-shift kit, and a harness bar with 4-point harnesses. A 915 limited slip gearbox was also installed. Cosmetically, the car is strong in all areas except for the paint. The car was painted when it first arrived in the United States, but now areas of poor prep and chipping are evident. As a car for dedicated use in driving events, the paint is fine, but it should otherwise be renewed. The body is straight and rust-free, and the remainder of the cosmetics is excellent. The lenses and lights are excellent, including the optionally fitted front and rear fog lamps. One of the side marker lights has been replaced with a scoop to provide cool air to the oil cooler (the original light is also included). The car also has European rear lenses. The other glazing and associated rubber are both excellent. Also evident are the optional headlight washers. The interior is extremely nice. The carpets were redone in 1999 and show no wear or deterioration. The seats are leather and exhibit some minor wear, but no tears or holes. The door panels are excellent and the dashboard is in outstanding as-new condition with no cracking, warping, or discoloration. The headliner in similar condition. The gauges work (except the clock) and the original metric speedometer is still fitted. The engine compartment is in outstanding condition. It is extraordinarily clean and in near show condition. It was rebuilt in 1999 at about 120,000km and was a complete job including bearings, rings, new valves, head studs etc. Updated lubricated Carrera 3.2 chain tensioners were also fitted, and the transmission rebuilt at that time. The front compartment is tidy and intact, though no spare tire is fitted. The underside presents as a nice honest unrestored car, with the exception of the engine which is again in fantastic condition. The underside as a whole is nice and tidy, and the suspension appears to be in good health. The floorpans are very solid. This car is an excellent opportunity to acquire a superbly set up example of this rare car. It drives nicely and with the upgrades, it handles very well. It pulls cleanly and strongly from low engine speeds and the B&B exhaust system sounds great. Furthermore, the car has a file full of receipts indicating the car`s history since the time of importation, a technical specifications manual, and a Porsche car cover. The car also comes with numerous boxes of spares, including 2 alternators, a set of plug wires, all air conditioning parts (condenser, compressor, hoses and brackets), the original steering wheel, 2 sun visors, the original torsion bars, swing arm bushings, new front and rear brake pads, original ignition equipment, the original shifter, a jacking plate, original seat belts, front license plate bracket and the original spring plates.
