Description

1977 Porsche 911S Coupe
s/n 9117200508, engine no. *6270887*
Silver with Black Leather Interior

Long overshadowed by the wildly collectible early 911s as well as the increasingly sought after cars of the 80s, the 2.7 liter “mid year” 911s are seeing rapidly increasing interest levels, particularly as early 930s explode in value. Inexpensive and viewed as expendable for many years, intact, original, and solid mid year cars are extraordinarily difficult to find today, and indeed, the $88,000 sale at Scottsdale 2014 of a silver on black 1977 911S with 21,000 miles demonstrates that mid year cars are no longer being overlooked by collectors.

This particular car is a very nice driver example with desirable original specification and exceptional structural integrity. It was sold new on the 20th of November 1976 at Westwood Porsche-Audi in Westwood, California, to a fellow living in Marina del Rey. It was serviced at the original selling dealer with 953 miles on it, and then at Max Dial Porsche in Inglewood with 5315 miles on it, when it was about a year old. By 1985, the car had accumulated 35,000 miles according to its original maintenance booklet, and then there is a gap in the documentation to the present. The car currently shows 43,000 miles. It is well optioned with sport seats, fog lights, air conditioning, rear windscreen wiper, and sunroof.

1977 was the first year of the fully galvanized 911 chassis, and as a result, these cars are much more resistant to corrosion. This car obviously spent much if not all of its life in Southern California and accordingly, it has an excellent structure. The body is generally straight other than a few minor dents, and the panel fit and gaps are excellent. The car wears a presentable paint job, although close inspection reveals that it was not completed to the highest standards. There are areas of orange peel and one area where the paint is lifting (although its surface is not broken) on the front right fender. There is a handful of small scratches about the car, although it makes good impression overall. The trim and rubber are in very good condition throughout, as are the glass and lenses. The car is fitted with European rear lenses. The car has been fitted with 7” Fuchs all round, which are in good fundamental condition, although the finish is dull and the wheels would benefit from polishing.

The interior is unrestored and in very good condition overall. The dashboard is excellent, with no cracking, warping, or discoloration. The switches and instruments are original and very nice, as are the carpets. The seats are correct and desirable sport seats and have never been reupholstered. The leather is cracking in places and the piping has worn through on the driver’s seat from ingress and egress. The headliner and visors are also original and in very good shape. An aftermarket stereo was added decades ago and now has an amusingly period feel.

The engine compartment is stock and unrestored in appearance. It has not been recently cleaned or detailed, but is extremely original in appearance. The smog equipment is still in place and the car passes California smog, and is fortunately not equipped with the troublesome thermal reactors. The air conditioning system is still in place, although the system does not turn on. The original 5-blade cooling fan is also in place still, as is the green fan shroud. The trunk appears as it should, with original carpet in good condition, save for a few small holes near the battery. The tool roll is present and in excellent condition. The jack and manual pack with books (including stamped service book) are also present.

This car is an exceptionally great driving example. The car is a pleasure to drive and has one of the finest, if not the finest 915 transmission that Fantasy Junction has had the pleasure of encountering in recent memory. The engine starts easily and is well tuned, and extremely responsive. It makes great power and is a genuine joy to use. The chassis and suspension are tight and coherent, providing the hallmark communicative Porsche feedback. The brakes work well and the entire driving experience is as good as if not better than that of the highly collectible 2.4 liter long hood cars.

This is a great opportunity to acquire a fundamentally unmolested and structurally excellent 911S that has great options and is a pleasure to drive. Finished in its desirable original color combination, this example is complete with books, tools, and jack and represents superb value as a car that is equally if not more enjoyable than the superheated long hood cars.
