Description

1987 Porsche 962C IMSA s/n 962-128 Yellow and Blue Hydro Aluminum Livery Described by Derek Bell as ``a beautifully efficient machine, easy to drive, with no bad habits``, Porsche`s 956 and 962 are absolutely legendary for their dominance in the international Endurance Sports Car racing scene throughout the eighties, and into the early nineties. Piloted by such legendary drivers as A.J. Foyt, Hans Stuck, Jackie Ickx, Al Holbert, Hurley Haywood, and Jurgen Barth, among others, these cars secured many world championships and Le Mans victories for Porsche, including first place at Le Mans from 1982-1987, and again in 1994. The cars underwent Porsche`s fastidious and continuous development, seeing the inclusion of electronic fuel injection, and with the introduction of the 962 to replace the 956, improved safety from a longer wheelbase that placed the driver`s feet behind the front wheels, and numerous other improvements. The 962 represented the culmination of decades of Porsche`s racing experience, and even compared to the already devastating 956, the 962 was a more resolved and effective car still. Their production numbers were also higher, making them easier to supply parts for today, which is especially nice as they have become eligible for an increasing number of elite racing venues around the globe. This particular car was delivered to Brun Racing in November of 1986, with its first outing the following February at the Daytona 24 hour, where it finished an outstanding second overall. It ran the remainder of the 1987 IMSA season, as well as that of 1988 and 1989, including a tenth place finish at Le Mans in 1989. It was then restored by Brun team manager Rudi Walch and remains in its Le Mans setup with 3.0 litre twin K27 turbocharged engine. The car was then purchased by an American Porsche collector, and has seen minimal use since. In May of 2007, a comprehensive inspection and race preparation was executed by Canepa Design, making the car truly turnkey and race ready. In summary, the work included the following: change all fluids, regular preventative service to engine (and compression/leakdown check), inspect engine and turbos, rebuild water pumps, new hoses and couplers, repair and powder coat shift linkage, fuel filters, inspect complete fuel system (fuel cell, lines, operation and pressure of pumps), inspect complete brake system, repair right front brake caliper, new pads, restore/repaint ducts, complete chassis/suspension inspection-disassemble chassis and suspension, clean and remove paint, magnaflux suspension and engine support, repair and refinish ground effect, repaint, set up chassis (corner weight, ride height, alignment), new BBS wheels and tires, replace extinguisher system, restore seats, replace harness, touch up paint in various areas of bodywork, repaint all black painted surfaces (side pods, door jambs, inside of doors, cockpit, rear firewall, ducts), recover dash, service linkages, replace battery, inspect/test electrical system, complete detail of engine, chassis, suspension, transmission, bodywork. This process is comprehensively documented with hundreds of photos. This car`s illustrious race history is as follows: (Date, Race, Drivers, Finish) 1987 IMSA Feb 2, Daytona 24 Hr., Oscar Larrauri/Gianfranco Brancatelli/Massimo Sigala, 2nd March 1 Miami 3 Hr, Massimo Sigala/Gianfranco Brancatelli, 5th June 21 West Palm Beach 3 Hr., Oscar Larrauri, DNF Aug 16 Road America 500, Oscar Larrauri, 2nd Oct 25 DEl Mar 2 Hr., Oscar Larrauri, 2nd 1988 IMSA Jan 31 Daytona 24 Hr., Oscar Larrauri/Massimo Sigala, DNF Feb 28 Miami 3 Hr., Oscar Larrauri, 3rd April 24 West Palm Beach 3 Hr., Oscar Larrauri/Massimo Sigala, DQ June 5 Mid Ohio 500km, Oscar Larrauri, DNF July 17 Road America, Oscar Larrauri, DNF Oct 23 Del Mar 2 Hr., Oscar Larrauri/ Massimo Sigala, 7th 1989 IMSA Feb 5th Daytona 24 Hr., Oscar Larrauri/Walter Brun/Hans- Stuck, 3rd May 3 Miami, Oscar Larrauri, DNS June 10 LeMans 24 Hr., Uwe Schafer/H. Huysmann/Dominiue Lacaud, 10th Today the car remains in very good to excellent condition cosmetically. The bodywork has virtually no time on the period livery repaint. The chassis is nicely detailed and polished, as are the like new BBS wheels. An extra double layer laminated honeycomb crush box has been added to the brake reservoir area to increase safety. The interior is trimmed and labeled as it would have been in period, and is extremely clean. With the car comes two sets of wheels (one new set with mounted sticker front tires, one used set with mounted used tires), an extra set of wheel nuts, transport wheel nuts, the original seat belts and fire bottles, and one complete set of used brake pads, among other bits and pieces. Today, with the advent of historic race events for which these cars are eligible, they are no longer merely old racecars, but have instead become imminently usable once again, recapturing much of the excitement and glory of when Porsche so authoritatively and completely reaffirmed their motor sports pedigree, which includes such legendary cars as the 550, 718, 906, 908, 910, 917, 934, 935, and 936. Prototype racecars such as this 962 are now highly sought after by individuals who watched them dominate the world of Endurance Sports Car Racing in their heyday, and are now financially able to relive those memories- this time from the driver`s seat.
