An Extraordinarily Clean Testarossa. California Car with Books, Tools, Jack, and Records
1988 Ferrari Testarossa
VIN ZFFSG17A6J0077256
Rosso Corsa with Tan Leather Interior
Upon its introduction in late 1984, the Testarossa stunned the world with its avant garde styling. Long, low, and wide, the Testarossa appeared even more so thanks to the extensive use of horizontal slatting, a feature that would be replicated both on other Ferraris and on many other lesser cars. Yet beneath these striking features was a surprisingly organic and handsome form that remains as arresting today as it was twenty years ago. Motivated by a new four valve version of Ferrari’s horizontally opposed twelve cylinder engine that made 390hp, the car was quick and made fantastic noises, but was also very plush with leather almost everywhere, including on the rear shelf, headliner, and visors. The trunk is reasonably sized and the car very comfortable and easy to drive, making it an ideal way to cover long distances at high speeds in comfort. Many Testarossa owners use them regularly and there are many owners with cars having covered over 125,000 miles, and even an example with over 200,000 miles!
This particular car has been in the San Francisco Bay Area of California since 1989, when it was purchased by an owner from Tiburon with 637 miles on it in for $192,992.30. He kept the car until 1993, selling it to another Bay Area owner, who then sold it back to the same fellow in Tiburon in 1997, at which time the car had 6500 miles on it. He kept the car until 2002, performing a major belt service in 2001. The car’s most recent owner acquired it via Fantasy Junction in 2002 with 13,000 miles on it. He maintained the car fastidiously, performing another belt service by Patrick Ottis in 2008, at which time the car had 20,119 miles. At this time, any issues needing attention were addressed, including a rebuilt water pump, new clutch release bearing, and all regular work associated with an engine out service including cam belts, valve adjustment, and new fluids throughout. More recently, the oil was changed by Patrick Ottis at 22,252 miles in September of 2013.
The car is in excellent condition throughout and it is clear that it has been carefully stored and enthusiastically owned throughout its life. The paintwork is extremely nice throughout, with very few stone chips, virtually no other damage, and no swirl marks or other significant signs of aging. The glass and lights are excellent throughout, as is the trim. The wheels are excellent with almost no curb rash, just a small mark on the left rear wheel, no more than an inch long.
The interior is in very nice original condition as well. Leather trim is used extensively throughout, which gives the car a high end feel that is different from earlier Ferraris. The leather is generally excellent, other than minor wear on the driver’s seat bolster, as well as some shrinkage on top of the dash. The carpets, instruments, and controls are in excellent original condition as well and the car is in exceptionally nice condition for a car of this age and mileage.
The engine compartment and trunk present similarly. They are original and correct in appearance, with minimal wear or aging to support the low mileage and careful storage of the car. The engine is correct throughout and extremely clean. The original components and decals are in place, with no modifications. The trunk carpet is excellent and the factory spare is in place, as are the tools and jack.
This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a properly maintained Testarossa with low miles and excellent California ownership history. It is extensively documented with service records back to 1989, book pouch with books, tool roll with tools, jack bag with jack, wheel chock, and light bulb holder. The car has always passed California smog with wide margins and is registered until October of 2014.
