1989 Ferrari 328 GTS
VIN ZFFXA20AXK0081609
Azzurro Metallizzato with Red Leather Interior
One of the last Ferraris engineered and launched during Enzo Ferrari's lifetime, the 328 succeeded the highly popular 308 for the 1986 model year and offered an increased displacement V-8 and a myriad of detail improvements throughout. The mid-engined 328, offered in both hardtop (GTB) and Targa/Spider (GTS) forms, featured an upgraded 3.2-liter V-8 putting out 270 horsepower, thanks to a sophisticated Marelli electronic ignition system and the retained Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. The styling was freshened with new door handles and tidier and more modern treatment to the front and rear fascias both of which gained body color bumpers. The interior was significantly reworked as well, with new switch gear and revised dashboard and door trims. Additionally, starting mid way through 1988, ABS became available for the first time. Production of the 328 ended in the fall of 1989, marking the end of the transverse mid engine Ferraris, a line that began with the 246 Dino. Nowadays, 328s are revered for their blend of usability and comparable reliability, as well as the comparative ease of servicing since the engine does not need to be removed to perform a belt service.
This particular car is a wonderful collector-grade example in superb unrestored condition. As a late production model, this car is equipped with ABS. It has covered less than 18,400 miles from new and is complete with service records back to new, tools, and books. It also comes with its original window sticker. Sold new on the 15th of August, 1989 at Ferrari of Houston, this car was relocated to Pennsylvania early in its life, where it remained under the care of the same owner for 22 years. During this period, the car was always serviced at Algar Ferrari, including annual services and a belt service in 2012 at 17,779 miles. The car remained in Pennsylvania until 2013.
The car is cosmetically exceptional and looks stunning in its unique original color combination of azzurro metallizzato with red leather interior. The paint appears to be entirely original and is superb, being almost completely free of blemishes. There are 3-4 stone chips on the front of the car plus a few much smaller marks. The front lights and chin spoiler are almost unworn, supporting the low mileage. There is one hairline crack in the front right turn signal lens. The body is straight and the panels fit and operate superbly. The level of finish is in keeping with how these cars were originally delivered, again reinforcing the timewarp character of the car. The paint has excellent luster and is free of other blemishes other than a very small surface imperfection on top of the right rear fender next to the rear deck lid, about the diameter of a round toothpick. The glass and lights are excellent across the board, and the wheels are free from kerbing or other marks.
The interior is in equally beautiful original condition. The leather on the seats shows very little wear, and the remaining leather, which covers the console, dashboard, and doors, is excellent. The dark blue carpets set off the red upholstery nicely and are excellent. The instruments and switches are like new and function properly. The air conditioning blows frigid cold. The cover for the top is still in place and is excellent as well.
The engine compartment is clean and correctly presented, but not immaculately detailed. It shows signs of proper maintenance and in short is presented in a way that is consistent with a well-maintained and properly stored car that has never been restored. The rear trunk is immaculate, with excellent carpet and pristine zipper cover. The front compartment is equally impressive, being extremely clean with an essentially as new appearance. The correct space saver tire is present, and the plastic liner tray is superb as well.
The car runs and drives superbly, feeling essentially like a new car. The engine starts easily and runs well, making noticeably more power than the 308. The steering and front suspension are extremely tight and solid, which inspires confidence and contributes significantly to the impression of a car that is basically new. The brakes are effective with good bite and nice linear action and the transmission works well, with good synchromesh from cold. The clutch grabs authoritatively and the overall driving experience is extremely gratifying and engaging.
This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire a truly outstanding 328 GTS. Extremely original and beautifully preserved in a stunning and very rare color combination, this car looks and drives like it’s a couple years old. It is also extremely complete and well-documented with records, books, and tools. Additionally, it is from the last year of production of the most developed form of the transverse engined small Ferraris, ensuring the collectability of the 328. This example is exceptionally original, well-maintained, very complete, and in a unique and attractive color combo, ensuring that it ticks all the boxes to become a truly exceptional investment grade example.
