1989 Ferrari 328 GTS
VIN ZFFXA20A9K0082489
Rosso Corsa with Tan Leather Interior
One of the last Ferraris engineered and launched during Enzo Ferrari's lifetime, the 328 succeeded the highly popular 308 for the 1986 model year featuring an increased displacement V-8 and a myriad of detailed improvements throughout. The mid-engine 328, offered in both hardtop (GTB) and Targa/Spider (GTS) form, featured an upgraded 3.2-liter V-8 engine with 270 horsepower, and a sophisticated Marelli electronic ignition system with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. The styling was freshened with new door handles and blended front and rear fascias both of which featured body color bumpers, creating a fluid and integrated body design. The interior was significantly reworked as well, with a new switch gear, revised dashboard, and improved door trim. Additionally, beginning midway through 1988, ABS became available for the first time on Ferraris. Production of the 328 ceased in the fall of 1989, marking the end of the transverse mid engine Ferraris, a line that traced back to the 246 Dino. Today, 328s are revered for their blend of performance and comparable reliability, coupled with their ease of servicing, especially since the engine does not need to be removed to perform a belt service.
This particular car is a wonderful collector-grade, documented low mile, late production ABS equipped, one owner example in excellent unrestored condition. The current and singular owner purchased this car new from Ron Tonkin Gran Turismo in Portland, Oregon on August 25, 1990. At that time the car had 103 miles, which was recorded on the original purchase invoice. The owner drove the car home to Reno, Nevada stopping in Northern California at Walnut Creek Ferrari, on September 10, 1990 where the car was serviced with 1,340 miles, recorded in the factory warranty booklet. Subsequent invoices for service have been retained with all noted repairs performed and mileage recorded by Intrepid Motorcar Company (Ferrari specialists) in Sparks, Nevada. In 1994 the car participated in a portion of the Virginia City Hillclimb, subsequently requiring repairs, which were professionally performed at Intrepid Motorcar Company. The rear bumper, belly pan, right door, and rocker panel were removed, and correctly refinished to a very high standard.
Having covered only 4,650 miles since new and supported by service records dating back to 1993 and the original warranty card dated to 1991, the car has been cared for and documented since new. A recent Carfax confirms accumulated mileage as shown in the service records. On March 17, 2017 a belt service was performed with 4557 miles including a water pump kit, BRG belt tensioner, cam seals, cam belt, water pump belt, alternator belt, and A/C belt. The cam clearances were checked and found to be within tolerances and all fluids were checked and serviced including an A/C Freon charge. At this time, the hood and rear deck lid struts were also replaced. Previous service from 2010 included new front hoses, radiator and coolant service, belt service in 2005, new seatbelts in 1998, and regular oil changes.
Today this late model Ferrari 328 GTS presents very nicely. The glossy Rosso Corso paint has excellent luster and is free from major blemishes other than a few small nicks at the front of the car and minor swirl marks on a few body sections. The body is straight and the panels fit and operate smoothly. The lighting, trim, and emblems are in excellent condition including the flexible black chin spoiler. The glass and lights are excellent across the board, as are the various black trims, rear spoiler, and recessed black body line. The unique ABS only wheels are in excellent condition showing no curb rash or edge marks with excellent glossy silver finish and correct yellow prancing horse centers. The exterior visual condition is in keeping with documented low mileage cars that have been carefully cared for under original ownership.
The interior is in equally beautiful original condition. The leather on the seats is consistently nice and tidy, with taut materials and correct satin sheen. Only a mild bit of driver’s side bolster wear is evident in the seat bolster. The finishes covering the console, dashboard, and doors, are excellent overall, nicely detailed and properly preserved. The instruments and switches are like new and function properly. The carpeting is clean and in very nice condition as well with mild wear in the foot box area. Accompanying chocolate brown floor mats are also in excellent condition. The removable top retains a beautiful satin textured finish and the protective top cover is in place, correctly situated behind the driver and passenger seats. Additionally the car is equipped with Simpson racing belts (conveniently tucked behind the roof cover) in addition to the factory seatbelts.
The engine compartment is clean and correctly presented, nicely detailed, and consistently maintained. Having never been restored, the engine compartment and engine retain factory components, correct hardware, and proper finishes, displaying correct factory plates and labels. The rear trunk is immaculate, with excellent carpet and pristine zipper cover operating smoothly. The front compartment is equally impressive, being extremely clean, offering an essentially new appearance. The correct space saver tire is present, and the plastic liner tray is preserved as new. The underside of the car is nicely preserved reflecting the low miles accumulated since new.
The car runs and drives beautifully, starting easily and settling into an even idle. The gearbox works smoothly engaging noticeably more power than the 308, delivering a refinement and composure confirming more than a decade of improvements since the 308 model launched new. The steering and front suspension is extremely tight and solid, which inspires confidence and contributes significantly to the overall driving experience. The ABS brakes are effective with good bite and nice linear action and the transmission works well, with good synchromesh from cold.
This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire an incredibly low mileage, one-owner Ferrari 328 GTS. Well documented and beautifully preserved, this car looks and drives as one might expect a low mileage original example to perform. Complete with service records since new, complete ownership books and pouch, jack and factory bag, and complete tools with factory wrap, this final iteration 328 is ready to enjoy, show, or preserve just as the original and singular owner has done since new.
