1990 Ferrari Testarossa
s/n *ZFFSG17AXL0085816*, engine no. F113.A040*23304*
Rosso Corsa with Black Leather
Introduced at the Paris Auto Show in 1984, the Pininfarina designed Ferrari Testarossa stunned the world with its unprecedented styling and technical innovations. With the previous cooling challenges and cabin heat in the 512 Boxer, the Testarossa adopted radiators on the sides of the car, allowing for a full 12” of additional width and an increased wheelbase. Of course, the added room allowed for ample trunk space, but the real delight was the bold use of the enormous side openings, which appeared even more dramatic when accented by five horizontal ribs shielding the vast openings, giving the Testarossa a unique visual signature. Whatever controversy ensued over the looks were immediately settled by performance statistics and record sales.
Power came from a new four valve version of Ferrari’s horizontally opposed twelve cylinder engine rated at 390hp. Quick and capable at high speeds, the Testarossa was also well appointed with leather surfacing on the rear shelf, headliner, and visors. The ample trunk for mid-engine cars, comfortable seating position, and ease of controls, make it an ideal car for comfortable long distance high-speed drives. Testarossa owners are known for frequently using their cars, several examples of which have logged over 100k miles and a few now in excess of 200k.
This particular car is an exceptionally high quality example. A matching numbers, original paint, three-owner car, it was originally delivered by Monterey Jaguar Rolls-Royce, Ferrari in Monterey, California on 30 October 1990. Its first owner kept the car for nearly 20 years, selling it to its second owner in Orinda, California in 2009. Fantasy Junction sold the car to its current owner in Oregon in 2015 with 25,000 miles. Service records back to new are included, and the car has been exhaustively documented with hand written ledger notes indicating date, miles, description of service events, service center name, and costs. The notations include 7,500 mile and 15,000 mile services as well as “major service” from Fiorano Motors, Monterey, CA on 12/31/03 with 21,589 for $10,768.58 and with Forza Motors, Monterey, CA on 10/9/07 with 22,989 for $8,820.87. In March 2015 with 25,275 miles, Ron Tonkin GT of Wilsonville, Oregon performed a $15,480.46 major engine-out service including a complete inspection, timing belt tensioner, and idler replacement. The brakes were also serviced at this time.
Today with 26,977 original, documented miles showing, this carefully preserved and properly maintained Testarossa presents in outstanding condition with original Ferrari Rosso Corsa paint accented by the supple factory black leather interior, including black dash. The exterior of the car is in exceptional condition with glossy and well-preserved factory paint, gleaming as new. Despite having higher miles than some Testarossas, the condition of this car is exceptional, presenting nicer than many cars with half the mileage. The fit and gaps of the body panels is excellent and the signature intake strakes are straight and nicely detailed. The front spoiler shows light wear only and the underside has been protected by an aluminum plate discreetly installed on the underside. The factory wheels are in excellent condition with no significant damage to the surfaces or edges. The glass, trim, and Testarossa signature black accents are all in excellent condition as well, including the emblems and script, all of which appear as new. The lighting and lenses throughout the car remain in excellent condition, showing no significant chips or marks and appearing to be original equipment.
The car’s interior is in beautiful condition, with exceptionally crisp presentation that belies the age and mileage of the car. The dashboard shows no shrinkage, the driver’s seat bolster is in excellent condition, and the plastics and other trim are in near-new condition. The leather is very clean and supple with no notable surface wear, including a leather seat bolster cover which has been installed on the driver’s seat and is secured with Velcro so that it can be easily removed. The dash, instruments, and black panels with rotating knobs all appear in exceptional condition. The carpeting and kick-plates all remain clean and devoid of any significant scuffs or stains. Even the floor mats show only minor use with just slight signs of wear and usage.
The engine compartment and trunk are essentially new with no noticeable wear in either location. The trunk liners and carpet are very clean as are the various original accessories including the tool roll, jack and bag, and washer reservoir. In the engine compartment, the firewall, side panels, and trim features are all beautifully preserved. The original matching numbers engine is in place, beautifully presented with assorted components, wiring, and hardware correctly finished with excellent detailing throughout. Cosmetically, the engine area is clean and original in appearance, which speaks well of the professional engine-out service and timing belt work done on the car. Workmanship includes proper cleaning and attention to detail, as evidenced by the fine presentation both under the hood and under the car. The cast aluminum engine pans are in excellent condition and the chassis appears very clean, free from any structural damage, and while generally tidy in appearance, there are some minor cosmetic scuff marks on the car’s underside and evidence of light road use showing in a few areas.
The car starts instantly and idles with a nice mellow but throaty growl. Driving is exciting and yet surprisingly easy with progressive acceleration, great torque, and wonderful power on hand without becoming ungainly. The width and low stance make for a commanding presence while driving, but once familiar with these dimensions, the Testarossa becomes remarkably nimble and reassuringly easy to drive at any speed. With the ease of driving, you quickly forget that you are in one of the most iconic and powerful modern Ferraris ever built.
The car comes with an original Ferrari tool set and jack in proper factory rolls, the original leather covered factory manual packet with factory books, and a detailed notebook containing service records, original ownership paperwork, handwritten notations for service and miles, dealer memos, letters from Ferrari, and an original sales brochure.
With recent major service, excellent history from new, and truly remarkable condition, this very desirable original and well-kept Ferrari Testarossa offers exceptional performance in a stunning and uniquely designed car that continues to draw crowds to this day.
