Description

1989 Ferrari Testarossa
VIN: ZFFSG17A1K0079417
Rosso Corsa with Tan Leather and Black Dash

Upon its introduction in late 1984, the Testarossa stunned the world with its avant garde styling. Long low and wide, the Testarossa appeared even more so thanks to the extensive use of horizontal slatting, a feature that would be replicated both on other Ferraris and on many other lesser cars. Yet beneath these striking features was a surprisingly organic and handsome form that remains as arresting today as it was twenty years ago. Motivated by a new four valve version of Ferrari`s horizontally opposed twelve cylinder engine that made 390hp, the car was quick and made fantastic noises, but was also very plush with leather almost everywhere, including on the rear shelf, headliner, and visors. The trunk is reasonably sized and the car very comfortable and easy to drive, making it an ideal way to cover long distances at high speeds in comfort. Many Testarossa owners use them regularly and there are many owners with cars having covered over 125,000 miles, and even an example with over 200,000 miles!

Sold new to Mr. G. Jenkins of La Jolla California, this particular car has covered just 38,000 miles from new. At the time of purchase by the present long-term owner in 1998, this example was treated to a full 30,822 mile major belt service, performed by the selling dealer, Ferrari of Los Gatos. At that time the car had logged just 16,483 miles. Much more recently the clutch was replaced (in 2008, at 33,000 miles), which was performed by noted late model Ferrari expert Brian Crall & Company in San Ramon, California. Other recent work performed by Brian Crall included replacing shift shaft linkage seals, replacing the distributor seal, servicing the front wheel bearings, replacing the fan speed transistor, and replacing the front brake pads. Records on hand, which date back to 1997, outline regular service and maintenance work. While a strong running and fully functioning automobile at this time, this Testarossa is technically due for a major service accordingly to Ferrari’s recommendations. That said, the recent replacement of the clutch (total cost was $4,000+) will simplify the upcoming major service work, and minimize the related expense.

Cosmetically, this example is best described as an exceedingly nice driver. The lower rocker panels and front spoiler have been repainted body color, a common aesthetic change performed on these cars. An aftermarket Momo “Zagatodesigns” steering wheel has been fitted. This example appears to have been optioned from the factory with a black dash as an alternative to the brown dash material fitted to virtually all cars. The sun-shrinkage common to Ferraris of the era is evident around the instrument cluster. The balance of the upholstery is in excellent driver condition. There are a handful of minor paint blemishes, typical of 25 year old automobiles. Most of these are minor stone chips on the frontal facing areas. The spoiler is in very good condition. Later factory Ferrari 512 Testarossa wheels are fitted, one of which displays curb rash.

This is a great opportunity to acquire one of these very neat and important cars. Their astonishing styling still carries tremendous impact, and they are modern, practical, and easy enough to drive to use on a regular basis. They represent a great way to enjoy the Ferrari experience as often as possible for the new owner. Moreover, with values of these cars stabilized and are beginning to go up, well cared for lower mileage examples such as this one can be a rationally appealing proposition as well.

Included with the sale are the books including supplement and the leather holder, tools and jack, an extra set of keys, two car covers, an extra set of front brake pads, and a spare Borla exhaust unit which replaces the rear catalytic converters. At this time the car is fully compliant with 50-State emission requirements, and is currently registered, smogged, and titled in the state of California.
