1989 Porsche Speedster
VIN WPOEB0911KS173612, engine no. 64K06232
Guards Red with Tan Leather
In 1989 Porsche assembled the final iteration of the G-Series torsion-bar based 911 chassis – the Speedster. Designed and developed as a heritage statement with reverence to the original Speedster, the 1989 version was in production for only six months with just 2,104 being built and only 823 delivered with US specifications. Since the original release almost thirty years ago, the 1989 Speedster has become nearly as iconic as the 356 version.
As the last of the venerable 911, these were truly pared down to the simplicity and purity of the original Speedsters. There was no power steering, no ABS, and only one computer in the car, the ECU for the 3.2 liter flat six. All cars were outfitted with the highly desirable G50 5-speed transaxle, which featured improved durability, better synchromesh, and a hydraulic clutch.
The body design was further refined, most prominently featuring a lower profile windscreen (cut three inches shorter), which was also raked back five more degrees. The convertible top was a single layer of material intended for temporary use only, and when raised gave the car a hunkered down “outlaw” appearance. The quarter windows were removed and door glass properly shaped to the new roofline. The rear seats were deleted and the rear compartment covered with a fiberglass hard shell cover painted to match the car’s exterior. Further weight savings included manual crank windows and no central locks.
Of the 2,109 Speedsters built, 823 came to the US. Nearly all delivered to the US were optioned with code M491, which included the now iconic Turbo specification fender flares, upgraded suspension, and amazing 4-piston brakes with cross-drilled rotors (originally specified for the 917). Upon release examples were rapidly trading above $100,000, despite its original sticker price of $65,480. Today their rarity, lightweight configuration, and distinctive styling make original examples highly sought after by enthusiasts who enjoy rare but driver-friendly performance cars.
According to the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this Speedster was completed June 20, 1989 and delivered with Guards Red paint and Cashmere Beige/Black Partial Leather interior. The car was delivered with several desirable options including Air Conditioning, Heated Seats, Blaupunkt Radio, Heavy Duty Windshield Cleaning, Headlight Washers, Storage in Place of Rear Seats, Series Seats with Electric Height Adjustment, Alarm System, and US Standard Emissions. According to the Carfax (on file) the first owner is recorded in Springfield, IL 1990 with 30 miles. The car changed hands twice before a new title was recorded in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA in April 1997 with 11,000 miles, where it appears to have remained for most of it’s life, having regular emission inspections at 21, 23, 25, 27, and 28,000 miles annually through 2010. From 2010-2016 the car accumulated roughly 2,000 miles. There are no accidents reported on the car.
Currently the car is in very nice condition, showing 32000 original miles from new. The paint and bodywork are in very nice shape overall. Paint-gauge tests indicate that the front of the car and bumpers maintain the original paint while the rear fenders, portions of the doors, and deck lid appear to have been resprayed. This is not uncommon due to years of accumulated rock chips speckling the wide Turbo-style bodywork. The paint blending of color is excellent and the finish is glossy throughout. There is no evidence of any damage to the body. The black trim and various exterior features are all in fine condition, further verifying the low miles and care this car has received.
Overall the car remains unmodified, with nearly all factory components in place. The interior presents nicely with upholstery, carpets, dashboard, instruments, and switches all appearing to have been properly maintained. The seats having been very nicely recovered in correct leather with excellent finish. Carpets appear original and are in good condition, including a complete set of matching beige floor mats (included with the car). Door panels and various other interior components appear original including the dashboard, which shows no cracks. Instruments are in nice condition with good color and clarity. The glass is in good condition overall but there is some black paint separation in a few underside perimeter areas around the windscreen. The wheels are in very nice condition, with very minor curb rash on the right rear wheel outer bead edge. The top is in very good condition, including the clear plastic rear window.
The engine compartment is both tidy and unmodified. The factory finishes appear consistent with the 32,000 miles recorded on this car. The front compartment is in equally nice condition, with no modifications and very nice visual presentation, including the trunk floor and inner fenders when inspected under the carpeting. The correct alloy spare is in place as are the jack and a nice quality car cover (included with the sale).
The car starts easily and immediately settles into a smooth idle. The clutch and gearbox work very smoothly together with no effort in all gears. Acceleration is brisk from the 3.2 liter engine with no hesitation and very progressive power as one advances through the higher gears. Braking is solid and smooth as is steering and overall control. The chassis is nicely balanced and contemporary despite being nearly thirty years old – a tribute to Porsche engineering. Windows operate up and down smoothly and various interior mechanical features also perform as expected. The air-conditioning functions, however it does not blow cold. A very nice black car cover, a spare set of matching floor mats, the original leather owners case containing the original books and manuals (including Speedster supplement) and Porsche Certificate of Authenticity are all included with this very nice Speedster.
This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire a nicely maintained, highly optioned original 32,000 mile 1989 Speedster in desirable colors. As the final 911 iteration, this Porsche Speedster is one of only 823 examples built for the US market. This car is ready to be driven, shown, and continually preserved marking an important history in the Porsche 911 lineage.
