1989 Porsche Speedster
VIN: WPOEB0917KS173453, Engine no. *64K06047*
Grand Prix White with Black Leather Interior

In 1989 Porsche assembled the final iteration of the G-Series torsion-bar based 911 chassis – the Speedster. Designed and developed as a heritage statement with reverence to the original Speedster, the 1989 version was produced for only six months, resulting in just 2,104 being built and only 823 delivered with US specifications. Since the original release almost thirty years ago, the 1989 Speedster has become nearly as iconic as the original 356.

As the last of the venerable 911, these were truly pared down to the simplicity and purity of the original Speedsters. There was no power steering, no ABS, and only one computer in the car, the ECU for the 3.2 liter flat six. All cars were outfitted with the highly desirable G50 5-speed transaxle, which featured improved durability, better synchromesh, and a hydraulic clutch.

The body design was further refined, most prominently featuring a lower profile windscreen (cut three inches shorter), and raked back five more degrees. The convertible top was a single layer of material intended for temporary use only, and when raised gave the car a hunkered down “outlaw” appearance. The quarter windows were removed and door glass properly shaped to the new roofline. The rear seats were deleted and the rear compartment covered with a fiberglass hard shell cover painted to match the car’s exterior. Further weight savings included manual crank windows and no central locks.

Of the 2,109 Speedsters built, 823 came to the US. Nearly all delivered to the US were optioned with code M491, which included the now iconic Turbo specification fender flares, upgraded suspension, and amazing 4-piston brakes with cross-drilled rotors (originally specified for the 917). Upon release, examples were rapidly trading above $100,000, despite its original sticker price of $65,480. Today their rarity, lightweight configuration, and distinctive styling make original examples highly sought after by enthusiasts who enjoy rare but driver-friendly performance cars.

This stunning example was delivered to Steve Taub Porsche in Santa Monica, CA in December 1989. Additional cost options ordered on the car included air conditioning and Leather Seats (in black). Over the past 28 years this Porsche has traveled a mere 1,109 miles. For anyone seeking an essentially new Porsche Speedster, this amazing time capsule vehicle has been carefully preserved and thoughtfully cared for without exception. The paint on the car has been checked with a digital paint meter and all surfaces verify that this is the original Grand Prix White paint sprayed at the factory. The paint is essentially new with beautiful high gloss and no marks of significance. The lower rocker surfaces, front valance, and rear fender flares are all free from chips or damage. All glass is original to the car. Lighting, trim, and emblems are simply gorgeous. The original top has a tight fit to the windshield frame and shows beautifully on the car. The wheels are free from edge marks or curb rash (though one rim has a slight mark at the very edge). The front tires are original to the car. The rear tires have been replaced due to age, but an original BF Goodrich has been retained for posterity.

As one might expect, the interior of the car remains unmodified, with all factory components in place. The upholstery, carpets, dashboard, instruments, and switches all appear as new with no sun damage. The instruments have bright color and clarity, and the dashboard and steering wheel both exhibit fresh textures with no wear. The leather seats display excellent finish with no evidence of wear or bolster marks. The original carpeting is also in excellent condition, showing virtually no wear in the foot-wells. Door panels show no cracks or flaws and are smooth and clean. There is simply no other way to describe the “feel” of this interior other than new. Every surface and detail is a delight of factory originality.

The engine compartment is exceptionally clean and unmodified. The factory finishes appear consistent with the 1,109 miles recorded on this car. Even the engine stickers show little to no signs of heat cycling or edge wear. The front storage compartment is in equally exceptional condition, with no modifications and very nice visual presentation. The correct space saver spare is in place as are the factory tools. Underneath the car is a breathtaking display of originality, factory finishes, proper fittings, and textbook accuracy for anyone looking to restore a car from this period. Here are all the correct original finishes with virtually no wear, only heat cycling evident in the exhaust and just mildly in the engine area. Even the protective light copper colored factory free-spraying is still on the car in various approved places, sprayed correctly on the suspension, engine casing, and correctly over-sprayed on the disc brake backside plates, further supporting the originality and preserved aspects of this amazing original Speedster.

The car starts instantly and immediately settles into a smooth idle. The clutch and gearbox work very smoothly together with no effort in all gears. The 3.2 liter engine, braking, and steering were top level when new and thus every aspect of this car responds today as it should, solid and smooth – a tribute to Porsche engineering when new and preserved for enthusiastic enjoyment today. Windows operate up and down smoothly and various interior features, switches, air conditioning, and instruments also perform as expected. Included with the car is a host of original items offered at delivery when new including the original window sticker, all books and delivery pamphlets, Porsche owners pouch, dealer license plate frame, front license plate mounting bracket (unused), Porsche touch up paint, tools, tool roll, spare belt, original Porsche tire inflator, and the spare set of keys. Also on file is a clean Carfax as well as invokes to support work performed including a “major” fluids change service and value adjustment performed at Beverly Hills Porsche at 1,062 miles.

This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire essentially a time capsule Porsche Speedster optioned with Leather seats and A/C boasting an astonishing original 1,109 miles. As the final 911 iteration, this Porsche Speedster is one of only 823 examples built for the US market and must be counted as one of the best original examples in existence today. This car is ready to be driven, shown, or continually preserved in tribute to the timeless legacy of amazing sports cars built by Porsche.
