Description

1991 Ferrari F40
VIN ZFFMN34A1L0087324
Red with Red and Carbon Fiber Interior

The F40 needs little introduction to Ferrari enthusiasts, and automobile enthusiasts in general. It is, quite simply, one of the most iconic, legendary, and even twenty years on, highest performing cars ever made. Famous for being the last project commissioned by Enzo Ferrari himself before his death in 1987, the goal of the F40 was to showcase the best of Ferrari`s contemporary know-how in a no-frills car meant for the driver. Even today, the technology is exotic, with a carbon fiber tub, and extensive use of aluminum and Kevlar. In other respects, however, the car is refreshingly simple, having no traction control, power steering or brakes, radio, or electric windows. Performance remains stunning, thanks to the sub 2500lb weight, and 478hp twin-turbocharged 2.9 liter V8. 0-60 was recorded in about 3.2 seconds, and the top speed was over 200mph.

This particular example has had three owners and remains a no-stories car that does not appear to ever have had any paintwork or damage. It was sold new at Ferrari of Los Gatos and then passed on to an owner in Washington State, before being sold on to its third owner in California, via Fantasy Junction, in 2003. It comes with records back to new, including a photocopy of the original window sticker. The car has been properly maintained, with a major service performed in 1998, 3000 miles ago. At that time, the cam seal housing update and oil return passageway updates were performed. More recently, in May of 2008, the car has had the A-arm suspension updates performed at Ferrari of Orange County.

Cosmetically, the car is original, and very well preserved. It has very light chipping to the front end, but shows no other cosmetic flaws or blemishes. The wheels are excellent, as is all of the trim, glass, and lights.

The interior is very impressive, with an almost complete lack of the usual materials. There are no carpets, and there is no leather, other than on the emergency brake boot and steering wheel. The floors, door panels, and sills are nicely finished carbon fiber, though the clear protective film applied to the sill area shows some blemishes. The seats show the usual wear near the seat belts, which is common to all F40`s, and the headliner is wrinkling in places. The dashboard, switches, and instruments are free of wear and damage, and the interior overwhelms the occupants with a sense of purpose.

The engine compartment is very impressive, with much plumbing and other mechanical components visible. It is a fascinating experience to behold the various oil coolers, intercoolers, and suspension details. Naturally, as such a low mileage well-cared for car, the engine compartment is very tidy and shows no untoward signs of neglect, abuse, or even much aging.

The front compartment is in fine condition as well, revealing the remarkable carbon fiber finishing of the body panels and tub. The visible frame components show no signs of accident damage, just a few areas of normal wear. The original tool roll with tools is present as well.

While the numbers are impressive and the road tests effusive, words do not really convey what the performance of this car is like. The acceleration is brutal, and the level of communication between car and driver unparalleled. Despite this however, the car is also quite docile, with conversation in the car at speed being effortless, and with the car pulling smoothly from all engine speeds. This example performs as strongly as it did when new, and is comparable in feel to a car with 1200 miles.

This is a rare opportunity to acquire a true legend. As automobile design progresses further and further away from the mechanical honesty of these older cars, enthusiasts are starting to appreciate the visceral experience of this car. Like all F40`s, this example has tremendous presence, yet could also be enjoyed with a reasonably clear conscience, unlike some examples that have not even turned over the fourth digit of the odometer. This car has had the most costly updates performed, and following routine servicing, is sure to provide much exhilaration for the new owner.
