Description

1993 Porsche 964 Carrera RS America Coupe
VIN WP0AB2963PS419184
Midnight Blue with Black Interior

Finally emerged from years of underappreciation, the 964 generation of the 911 lies at the intersection of vintage and modern 911s, bringing the best of both. Unequivocally a true traditional 911 thanks to its greenhouse, fenders, and air-cooled engine, but also genuinely capable thanks to McPherson strut suspension, oomphy 3.6 liter twin-plug engine, modern braking performance, and wheels big enough to accept the most sophisticated modern tires, the 964 is ideal for the enthusiast seeking both performance and the unadulterated air-cooled 911 experience. Launched just prior to global recession and with a relatively short six model year production run, the 964 is relatively rare. While Porsche’s North America sales totaled over 30,000 cars in 1986, 1993 production fell to just 3,700 cars. Additionally, an unprecedented proliferation of variants arrived with the 964. In addition to the coupe, targa, and cabriolet body styles, there was also a four-wheel drive version and an automatic. The enthusiast pick has always been the two wheel drive manual coupe, and the even more driver-focused RS variant is even more desirable.

Launched to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original RS, the 1973 2.7 Carrera RS, the RS America was a performance special for the North American market. All of the cars were 2 wheel drive coupes, fitted with fixed and therefore lighter rear whale tails (making them the only 964s to be so equipped from the factory), rear seat delete, cloth sport seats, lightweight door panels, reduced sound proofing, no power steering, and M030 sport suspension, which included shorter, stiffer springs, sport shock absorbers, larger front sway bar, and 17” Cup I wheels. Special badging and a select range of five colors completed the car’s special equipment. In keeping with the car’s performance ethos, the option list was limited to just four items: air conditioning, sunroof, radio, and limited slip differential. Seatbelts and door pulls could be ordered in contrasting color, and the RS decals on the side of the car were shipped over in the glovebox so that the selling dealer could apply them at the customer’s request. In all, just 701 examples were built.

According to the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this particular RS America was completed November 9, 1992 and delivered with all four of the available options and special order Midnight Blue Metallic/F8 exterior paint. The following options are listed on the COA including the special order blue seatbelts and door straps:

US Standard Emissions
Safety Belts & Strap Handles for Doors in Blue
Limited Slip Differential
AM/FM Radio w/Cassette Player & Two Loudspeakers
Air Conditioning w/Full Climate Control
Electric Sliding Sunroof
Yokohama Tires

This car spent its early life in Colorado before coming to California when it was about a year old. It has spent the remainder of its life on the west coast. Since it was delivered new, the car has seen general service and repairs as needed, supported by a recent Carfax indicating mileage consistent with the odometer currently displaying 69,678 miles. Documents and Carfax support various interval services and several passed emission inspections. Per Porsche’s original intent, past ownership has included some track time as witnessed by the installed roll bar, a spare set of wheels accompanying the car (sporting slick track tires), and a spare set of Recaro bucket seats. In 2009 with 63,107 miles indicated, new Pagid Orange front brake pads and new cross-drilled rotors were installed along with a complete brake fluid flush using ATE Blue fluid totaling $1,173.00. The current owner purchased the car in 20013 and, with 65,031 miles indicated, had the front lower control arm bushings replaced, proper alignment performed, and the engine belts replaced, totaling $1,388.00.

Today, this Porsche presents in nice driver condition, consistent with the original intent Porsche had in mind when constructing them for performance enthusiasts. The paint is glossy overall, exhibiting some evidence of use around the car but still remaining shiny with good overall presentation. The car appears to have been partially repainted; metering it that the front of the car has been painted, including both fenders, the hood, with blending into the doors. The body is in very good condition with straight panels. The rear spoiler is in very good condition with good trim and excellent fit to the body. The car appears to retain the original factory glass in very good condition, with the windshield showing some chips. The wheels are in generally good condition with minor curb rash on one wheel, and otherwise nice silver finish on all four wheels. The overall look and feel of this car is purposeful and distinctive, ready to live up to the 911 heritage and RS performance moniker.

The original interior shows very nicely, with combination cloth and leatherette seats accented by the optional blue seatbelts and door pulls. There is one area of minor wear showing on the driver’s side seat bolster and minor surface scratches in a few areas, but otherwise, the condition throughout the interior is consistent with nice door panels and clean carpet. The gauges show some aging and there are a few hairline cracks on the top of the dashboard on the instrument binnacle. The unobtrusive roll bar is professionally installed, proudly displaying past event stickers while the rear carpeted retains the correct storage compartments fitted to 1993 RSAs. The center console and lower dashboard are all nicely preserved. The overall fit and finish of the interior is clean and cohesive, having been purposefully enjoyed, while still maintaining a very presentable look and feel.

The engine compartment is stock overall in appearance and cleanly presented. The original engine remains in the car, exhibiting correct and properly maintained components, with leakdown checked 4,000 miles ago in 2013, which showed less than 2% on all cylinders. The trunk is also original in appearance offering factory finishes including the collapsible spare tire, compressor, and tools.

The car is a joy to drive, delivering the inimitable air-cooled 911 experience. The starts instantly and the clutch and gearbox work very well together in all gears, with good synchromesh and a nice linear clutch with proper friction point. Shifting is smooth and the engine exhibits very good acceleration, offering appreciably more torque than earlier 911s. The motor provides a wonderful induction roar and the performance is thrilling, even by modern standards. The suspension and steering have the wonderfully-talkative 911 character, while the brakes offer a firm pedal and are effective but likely will need some attention in the future as they exhibit some pulsation. The chassis is composed, tight, and rewarding, delivering the performance feel one appropriate for a car of this distinction.

The car comes with a set of factory books (missing the pouch), factory compressor, tool roll with tools, and factory jack. Accompanying the car is a set of Recaro seats, original muffler (a primary muffler bypass is currently installed), engine undertray, a set of wheels with racing tires, the Porsche CoA, and a handful of assorted service records.

The concept of the RS America was basically unprecedented in the United States. Porsche had for many years (mis)read the American market as comfort-oriented and therefore disinterested in the intensity of the most focused driver’s cars they made. The 1973 Carrera RS was never sold here, the Carrera 3.2 Club Sport was brought over in laughably small numbers (28 cars), and so the RSA was Porsche’s first foray into their now burgeoning GT car (GT3, GT2, and GT4) program, before it was even so named. Exceptionally rare with just 701 examples made, the RS America is rightly emerging as a modern collectible. This particular car represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a fully optioned RS America in rare colors. The purposeful cosmetics combined with regular service, allows for a performance minded enthusiast to track or drive his Porsche just as the factory intended when these great cars were released to Porsche enthusiasts 25 years ago.
