An instant classic, the 993 generation of the Porsche 911 is now highly sought after for a number of reasons. As the last of the air-cooled 911s, they are the most developed of the original formula that first appeared in 1963. The layout of the instruments, the sheetmetal of the door, and the entire greenhouse is fundamentally unchanged from the original 911, and these cars have a feeling of solidity and craftsmanship that was not only missing from the 996 generation that replaced the 993, but is missing from almost every car made in the last 20 years.
Yet despite this old-world craftsmanship and the occasional sign that the fundamental architecture dates back to the 1960s, the 993 is impressively modern, even eighteen years after its introduction. The sophisticated multilink rear suspension and massive rear tires tame the often-derided rear placement of the engine, while the twin plug 3.6 liter flat-6 is a torquey high-performance unit that is easy to live and use. The brakes, always a Porsche strong suit, are superb, and the gearbox is Porsche's robust 6-speed G50 unit. Thus, the 993 lies at a fascinating intersection that separates it from every other 911. Sophisticated and high performance even compared to modern cars, yet capturing the classic essence of the original 911, the 993 is the best of both worlds, and it's no surprise that they are worth considerably more than the cars that replaced them. 993s are true classics that can be driven and enjoyed daily, and from an investment standpoint, are positioned to continue to appreciate.
The 993 was available in a variety of forms, with naturally-aspirated and turbocharged engines, rear and four wheel drive, wide and narrow bodies, and in open and closed forms. One of the most collectible of all the variants is the Carrera 4S. Combining the clean profile and naturally-aspirated 3.6 liter twin plug flat six of the Carrera 4 with the widened flares, wheels, suspension and famous \"big red\" brakes of the Twin Turbo, the Carrera 4S is an aggressive yet beautiful car with tremendous presence, and along with the Carrera S (which does not have the \"big red\" brakes from the Turbo), is the most sought-after and valuable naturally-aspirated 993 that was available in the US.
This particular car has been with the current owner since 2013 during which time it has covered 1000 miles. He bought the car from the second owner, who knew of the car when it still belonged to its first owner, who was an oral surgeon. The car is complete with books, tools, and jack and is well optioned. Options include Litronic headlights, heated seats, comfort seats, embossed headrest crests, supple leather, hi-fi, digital sound, 6-disc CD changer, on board computer, and root wood shifter and hand brake handle. The car has a few service records since 2013 showing regular maintenance. The current owner fitted full front end clear bra which covers the entire front deck lid, bumper, and front fenders. It has also been applied to the edges of the doors. The car also was fitted with a genuine Turbo tail early in its life, and sits on modular Speedline wheels and H&R coil overs. It also has B&B exhaust and combination brake ducts/projector fog lamps.
The car is cosmetically excellent with light wear from road use visible through the clear bra. There are no other major paint blemishes worth noting. The wheels are in excellent shape, with no real curb rash but a few marks to the wheel rims, likely from mounting and dismounting tires. The windscreen has a few small marks and the glass is otherwise excellent.
The interior is nearly unmarked, with light wear to the driver's seat only. The car has aluminum gauges, which are in excellent shape along with the rest of the dashboard. The switch gear is excellent as are the carpets, door panels, and headliner. The car has factory type fitted over mats with red Porsche embroidery.
The engine compartment and trunk both present in a manner consistent with a low mileage well-maintained car. The engine is clean and stock in appearance and the trunk carpet is in excellent shape. The original tools are present in their bag, as are the jack in its bag, and the CD changer in its compartment. The original options sticker is still present on the underside of the front deck lid.
The car runs and drives superbly. It operates as it should, with strong engine and ample torque, which gives the car a level of usability that distinguishes these 3.6 liter 911s from all other air-cooled cars. The level of performance, braking, and handling are genuinely exceptional and the car is still a fair bit more capable than most of the cars on the road, making this a collectable car that is still quite usable and entertaining. The brakes are superb, the clutch and shifter excellent, and the overall feel is of the familiar 911 formula taken to its ultimate, and in some way quite modern, conclusion, which underscores why these cars have become so collectable in recent years.
This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a tastefully upgraded widebody 993 with low mileage. A complete and well-optioned example, this car has no excuses and is an excellent way to enjoy one of the most desirable variants of a rapidly appreciating and iconic Porsche model.
