Description
One of the second generation of Porsches production based, water-cooled GT racecars. The introduction of the GT3R in 1999 quickly made the more primitive, traditional, air-cooled RSR chassis uncompetitive against the factory 996s. Driving for Porsche, Cort Wager effortlessly drove the GT3R to both the American Le Mans Series constructor and drivers championships in 1999. This car was one of several factory built cars in the hands of privateer teams, often driven partly by proper professionals, partly by gentleman drivers. Rarely were the privateer teams able to overcome the talent deficit and beat the factory-supported cars, despite having comparable equipment. Because of this, the majority of the race victories by GT3R went to only a few factory-supported chassis. In 2002 the car was fitted with the RS updated clutch and flywheel assembly and run in various American Le Mans Series, and Grand-Am events. Driven by the Father and Son team of Joe Policastro, Jr. and Sr, Gunner Jeannette, and Michael Brockman for Gunnar Racing, as well as Rick Skelton, Brad Nyberg, Joe Foster, for Hyper Sport Racing. Last run in 2003 at the 12 Hours of Sebring, the motor has 15 hours of time on a Porsche Motorsports Rebuild. The rest of the car is has been cosmetically and mechanically freshened and needs nothing to be track-ready. An extra set of wheels and tires are present and come with the car.
