Description

2008 Tesla Roadster
VIN: 5YJRE11B381000048
Midnight Metallic Blue with Black Leather

An all-electric sports car produced by Menlo Park, California based firm Tesla Motors, the Tesla Roadsters are innovative, efficient, and seductively beautiful- and not a lot of things you can buy boast all three of these! Perhaps more importantly, the winner of Time Magazine’s 2008 Best Transportation Invention, Popular Mechanics 2006 Breakthrough Award, du Pont Registry’s 2009 Best Green Exotic, and Forbes Magazine’s “Best new car that lived up to the hype”, the Tesla Roadster the car that paved the way to environmentally friendly performance in modern motor cars.

This example is the 48th of just 100 roadsters built in the Signature One Hundred series which are equipped with all options available at the time of production and supplied with an extended bumper to bumper transferable warranty for 4 years or 50,000 miles. The Signature One Hundred series cars delivered during the 2008 calendar year were completely sold out by September of 2006. Although production is increasing during 2009, delivery delays still exist and pricing has increased by approximately 10%.

While publically unveiled at the San Francisco International Auto Show on November 18–26, 2006, mainline production didn’t begin until March of 2008. The Roadster was developed by Tesla Motors with design help from Lotus Cars in certain areas. Lotus supplied the basic chassis development technology from its Lotus Elise, with which the Tesla engineers designed a new chassis. Barney Hatt at Lotus's design studio developed the styling with input from Tesla. Tesla's designers chose to construct the body panels using resin transfer molded carbon fiber composite to minimize weight; this choice makes the Roadster one of the least expensive cars with an entirely carbon fiber skin. Power is supplied from a 3-phase, 4-pole AC electric motor, producing a maximum net power of 248 hp. Maximum torque is 200 ft-lb, obtained at 0 rpm and almost constant up to 6,000 rpm, a common feature of electric motors and one of the biggest differences with internal combustion engines. Transmission is a direct drive BorgWarner unit. Power is stored in lithium-ion batteries creating a potential range of 244 miles on a single charge while 0-60 acceleration is achieved in just 3.9 seconds. The Roadster's efficiency, as of September 2008, was reported at 120mpg using a standard conversion equation. A full recharge of the battery system requires 3½ hours using the high power connector.

This particular car is in showroom condition, having logged just 2522 miles from its delivery date in November of 2008. No maintenance or repair has been required to date. The dark metallic blue paint has a beautiful luster over unmarked body panels. The wheels, window glass, and black trim pieces are all in like-new condition.

The interior is also like new, with only the slightest markings from entry and exit. Impressive carbon fiber trim covers virtually every panel, which combined with the various information touch screens, gives the passengers a truly space age experience.

Driving the 2008 Roadster is truly different. At a stand still, the exhaust drone we have grown to expect is absent. Acceleration is impressive from walking speeds, while the brakes are more than adequate. As one would expect of an automobile designed by Lotus, steering is tight and responsive and the driver feels at one with both the car and the road. In contrast to a new SUV or late model Ferrari, the Telsa is a magnet for positive attention everywhere it goes.

With this example comes everything delivered to the original owner: home and travel charging systems, sales invoices, window sticker, tire inflator, soft top and frame, tools, manuals, Signature One Hundred identification plate, sales brochures, and color sample decision kit. The car also comes with a hard top, not yet supplied by Tesla!

In addition to their main Bay Area showroom in Menlo Park, California, Tesla has recently reached an agreement to open stores in Chicago, and is close to finalizing locations in Miami, New York, and Seattle. The first Tesla Motors service center, in Los Angeles, CA, was opened on Santa Monica Boulevard in May of2008. Additional service centers for the Tesla Roadster are planned for New York, NY, Miami, FL, Chicago, IL and Seattle, WA. Tesla Motors has plans to mass produce a 4-door sedan to complete directly with the major manufactures, and plans to expand their service locations accordingly.

This car, s/n 00048, represents an absolute ground breaking automobile in investment grade condition. Available for immediate delivery, the discerning buyer will recognize this as an opportunity to avoid delivery delays and premiums paid for the 2009 models, while acquiring one of the 100 Signature models accompanied by the extended 4 year/50,000 warranty.
