General Overview

These days, electric cars are everywhere. But in 2008, the notion of a high-performance electric car was something only bold pioneers were willing to take on. Such is the case with Tesla. Originally developed with a range of conceptual engineering ideas and a series of test platforms, by 2005, Tesla and Lotus agreed to use the Lotus Elise platform as the basis for the new Tesla Roadster. Built with a longer wheelbase, stiffer chassis, and carbon composite body panels, the new design was lightweight, stylish, and had the benefit of low-cost manufacturing. Development continued into 2007 with the first production cars announced for production in 2008.

Though production volume was far fewer than what Tesla would achieve in the coming years with their sedans and SUV models, the Roaster proved that a profitable performance electric car could be successfully built and sold to an eager public willing to pay Porsche prices to a largely unknown performance brand. The 3-phase 4-pole AC induction electric motor put out 248hp, but the immediacy of the acceleration was enhanced by the instant torque, a feature all electric motored cars enjoy. Coupled to a single speed fixed gear transmission 0-60 mph was achieved in a surprisingly quick 3.9 seconds with quarter mile times in the sub 13 second range, figures normally confined to high-performance Italian exotics. When production ended in 2012, approximately 2,500 Roadsters had been produced, making it one of the rarest of all Tesla model cars built.

History of This Car

This Tesla Roadster 2.0 was purchased new with the over $15,000 worth of extra-cost items added to this already premium performance vehicle:

- Metallic Paint
- Solar Guard Windshield
- Hardtop Carbon Fiber
- Forged Wheels
- Adjustable Suspension
- Electronics Group
- Premium Interior

The first owner enjoyed the car briefly but chose to store it for a few years after purchase thus limiting the accumulated miles to just over 2,000. The car was sold to the second owner in 2014 with 2,186 miles indicated at time of sale. For the past nine years, the current owner has serviced the car regularly at the Tesla service center in Northern California. A 2015 invoice includes warranty work replacing the right wheel tire pressure sensor, TPMS programming procedure, and tire pressure setting. During this time, the car was given an ESS battery bleed and GSM test, with passing results. A general inspection and software log review was also performed indicating no active faults. Later that same year, the car was updated with Xenon HL right and left headlamps and levels set for headlamps. ESS bleed test and GSM were also performed with no faults detected, and the keyless remote transmitter was replaced. In 2019, 2020, and 2022 annual services were completed. In 2022 a brake fluid flush was performed, AC refrigerant recharged, a wheel TPMS sensor and TPMS control unit replaced, and the auxiliary 12V battery was replaced. In April 2023, the car was serviced at the dealer in preparation for consignment.

General Condition

Today this Tesla Roadster presents as an excellent example of a truly ground-breaking vehicle. Finished in vivid Metallic Red paint, the finish is in excellent condition with no major flaws of note with just a few small imperfections on the front bumper cap. All glass, clear front and rear lenses, and exterior body trim are in excellent cosmetic condition including the beautiful, upgraded Xenon headlamps and enclosures. The body is free from major blemishes and all openings function as new, with excellent closure, proper panel gapping, and crisp fit to the front and rear bumper caps. There are no chips or notable scratches in the windshield, rear, or side glass. The optional alloy wheels are in excellent condition. The carbon fiber roof band is a nice touch to the convertible design which matches the optional removable hard shell carbon roof.

Inside the car, the supple, factory fresh interior exhibits near new finishes throughout. All interior components have been beautifully maintained including the digital and analog instruments in the central binnacle. A JVC Navigation and stereo unit is in place while basic controls offer easy access. Having been recently recharged, the AC system works properly and blows cold. The sculpted seats offer excellent support for sport driving with surprising comfort for long range cruising. Every aspect of the interior is both beautifully finished and exceptionally well-cared for from the pushbutton transmission selectors to the power window controls, all features operate smoothly and correctly. The rear storage area continues with an exemplary presentation offering factory finishes, while the front area reveals excellent packaging for the cooling fans and electronic systems.

The undercarriage of the car further supports the documented low miles showing no significant road marks on the factory aerodynamic chassis pans. Suspension and various exposed components revealed in the underside are also in excellent condition, displaying a clean and sound appearance.

Driving the Tesla Roadster is an electrifying experience. Power can be gently progressive or rapidly delivered with shocking results. Stealthily quiet without any combustion to engage clues to acceleration, power comes on in a rush as 60 mph arrives in mere seconds. Despite the performance, the cabin is comfortable and suitable for even taller drivers. The cabin is comfortable, offers refreshing AC, easy to use controls, and an impressive sound system. Every aspect of performance is well served and enjoyably so, especially while passing fueling stations with the convenience of quickly replenishable charging at home or through a network of available Tesla charging stations throughout North America.
