General History

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is considered one of the finest contemporary performance cars ever offered for road use. A tour de force of engineering and design, the front engine mid-bias platform was conceived as the spiritual successor to the legendary 300SL Gullwing, hence the name Super Leight Sport or Super Light Sport. The first car designed and built entirely from scratch by AMG, the SLS debuted at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show to rave reviews. The 563 hp V8 engine was billed as the “World’s most powerful naturally aspirated production series engine” ever offered in a production car – but the engine was just one component comprising a vast array of astonishing features and amenities assembled into a world class performance package.

Invoking the classic 300SL Gullwing, the SLS AMG delivered a commanding visual presence consistent with the racing and performance history of these legendary cars. Outfitted with comfort features supported by a technologically advanced drivetrain, race-derived suspension, and phenomenal brakes, the SLS AMG received numerous design awards and distinctions. The aluminum chassis and body were produced by Magna Steyr, Austria, as each car was individually prepared and outfitted per customer order including each engine, assembled by hand at AMG in Affalterbach, Germany. Offered initially for the European markets, the SLS AMG was officially made available for US delivery mid-year 2011 with the roadster becoming available that same year. Using a similar design layout to the coupe, the roadster featured conventional doors, a three-layered convertible power top, and additional structural support needed in the open roadster configuration.

At the heart of the SLS, the AMG M159 engine was derived from the M156 series block. The AMG team engineered over 120 engine modifications including a magnesium intake, forged pistons, optimized tubular headers, and a dry sump oil system, which allowed for better oiling under intense cornering conditions, and a lower center of gravity when positioned in the engine compartment. An AMG Dual Clutch Semi-Automatic transmission utilized a lightweight carbon fiber driveshaft offering selectable driving modes including a manual shift mode via steering wheel paddles. Four-wheel disc anti-lock braking is managed with 6-piston aluminum front and 4-piston aluminum rear calipers. The combined engineering and dedicated AMG performance capacity resulted in road tests delivering supercar level 0-60 mph times of 3.8 seconds and quarter mile times of 11.7 seconds at 125 mph. In addition to the lightweight material construction and superlative engineering, all cars were outfitted with the AMG limited slip differential and forged dual wishbone suspension.

Standard interior amenities included Parktronic, auto dimming and folding mirrors, dual zone climate control, heated power seats, iPod/MP3 Media Interface, and Enhanced Voice Control System, to name a few of the many comfort and convenience features offered on the car. Further standard features included eight airbags, Bi-Xenon headlamps, rearview camera, and LED daylight running lights. The combined elegance, superlative performance, and landmark design made the SLS AMG the pinnacle of Mercedes Benz performance, not just as a spectacular performance car, but just as suited for vigorous high-speed jaunts at record times, or leisurely elegant road touring.

The third owner purchased the car in 2020 with approximately 22,000 miles. The National Mercedes-Benz Database for service recall campaigns reports that there are no outstanding recall items on this car and that both driver and passenger side airbags were replaced under the required recall campaign.

The current and fourth owner purchased the car in July 2022 with 23,779 miles. In June 2022 services performed by The Luxury Collection Walnut Creek included a multipoint inspection, Mercedes “A” Service oil and filter change, wheel rims cosmetically repaired for curb rash, balanced, and alignment performed, and the wipers replaced. Cosmetic Presentation

Today this beautiful and uniquely finished car presents with the original Designo Magno Monza Grey paint delivering a contemporary and dynamic satin finish. Digital paint meter readings taken throughout the surface of the car have returned factory thickness numbers consistent with factory paint original cars. All glass surfaces, clear front and rear lenses, and exterior body trim are in excellent cosmetic condition including the carbon fiber trim on the side view mirror bodies. The paint is in excellent condition throughout with no notable flaws. All openings function as new, with excellent closure, and proper panel gaps. The convertible top raises and lowers smoothly and nests tightly into the rear area. There are no chips or scratches in the expansive windshield. The recently refinished optional black wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport tires are in excellent condition (2015 front, 2021 rear dates) accented by the optional red brake calipers.

Inside the car, the supple, factory Sand Designo Exclusive leather interior exhibits excellent finishes throughout. All interior components have been beautifully maintained including smooth and supple leather trimmed seats, sculpted dash, and console materials, all of which form a beautifully cohesive cockpit. The leather seats are not only visually stunning, comfortable, and supportive, they offer the perfect balance of support and comfort in a range of driving conditions. The leather steering wheel offers an elegant touch to the sporting interior flanked by paddle shift levers which activate the 7-speed transmission. The balance of the elegant interior, black accent stitching, carbon fiber interior surfaces, and sophisticated information technology truly convey a sporting elegance to this flagship SLS AMG. The trunk compartment continues the exemplary presentation with factory finishes and plenty of room for weekend luggage for two.

Under the hood, the stout and visually stunning 6.3 Liter hand-built AMG performance engine has been meticulously maintained both mechanically and cosmetically, showing only minor signs of use, further supporting the original documented miles. Factory components, trim pieces, and manufacturer's engine compartment stickers remain in place, as new. The undercarriage of the car further supports the miles showing no significant road marks on the factory aerodynamic chassis pans. Suspension and various exposed components revealed in the underside are also in excellent condition, with a clean and fresh appearance.

Driving Impressions

Driving the SLS AMG is an amazing experience. The leather touchpoints are elegant complements to the insatiable acceleration. Docile when in daily use, traffic is easily consumed in comfortable AC with the integrated audio system. Although the SLS AMG is calm and patient, offering refreshing climate controls, premium Bang & Olufsen sounds, and easy to use conveniences, when summoned at the accelerator pedal, this powerhouse of performance delivers a surge of power sending you and your delighted occupant on a 3-second vault to legal highway speeds. Cornering and braking are magnificent, coming down from high speeds smoothly and evenly via world class brakes. Unlike many fussy or hard to manage high-performance cars, the legacy of racing and confidence behind the wheel of this SLS AMG reveals a truly landmark driving experience.

This exceptional Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG roadster is accompanied by a car cover, first aid kit, a front license plate mount, replacement emblem, and two key fobs.
