Maserati Historic Overview

Fueled by a passion for racing and driven to build the fastest competition sports cars, the Maserati brothers had risen from their pre-war bootstraps to become leaders in performance engineering and premier automotive artisanship. Through determination and innovation, Maserati assembled some of the finest race cars in the world, attracting world-class drivers, reminding everyone that Italy could host more than one national sports car leader at the racetrack. Though lacking the resources of larger companies, Maserati remained highly competitive, earning multiple world racing titles with a great range of performance cars and road cars.

Developed in 1955 initially as the 200S, the concept for a light alloy twin-cam twin-plug 4-cylinder powered car was partially motivated by Ferrari who were successfully campaigning their 500 Mondial. Using an in-house modified Gilco tubular steel chassis draped in Fantuzzi aluminum coachwork, the series advanced to 1956 and in final iteration by 1957, motivated by new regulations, as the Si model which included functional doors, a wider windscreen, wipers and doors, and other improvements. In 1955, the 200S set a new class lap record set at Nurburgring as additional wins mounted internationally through ‘56 and ‘57. With just 2o 200Si (Sport Internazionale) examples produced, these rare and highly desirable cars are considered one of the best handling race cars of this period including the praise of Fangio himself declaring “This Maserati is the ideal competition car”.

History of this Maserati

According to Maserati S.p.A. certificate of origin, records, and prior recorded histories compiled on this car, chassis #2425 was completed at Maserati and designated as a works racer where it is recorded competing in two races in 1957, achieving 1st at GP Cadours and 3rd at Giro di Sicillia. By October 1957 the car was exported to North America where driver Jim Hall completed the 1957 season with five more races at Laguna Seca, Riverside, and Hourglass. In 1958 Bob Kuhn would assume driving duties, achieving a 5th at Watkins Glen and 6th at Lime Rock. By 1962, the car would continue racing with Otto Klein at the wheel with races through 1964 including 1st place 1963 Regional Wilmont Hills and 1st place 1963 Regional Lawrenceville, Modified. Later that same year, the engine was removed and the car converted to Chevy power. By 1984 the car would continue with participation in both 1984 and 1987 Mille Miglia and in 1995 become the subject of a comprehensive restoration. After restoration this 200Si continued to participate in major international events including Ferrari Maserati Historic Challenge SpA and OGP Nurburgring into the early 2000s with further premium event participation over the past two decades including display at Pebble Beach during the Maserati celebration year and participation in the 2014 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. #2425 is titled and registered in the US, is currently set up to run on race fuel, has an FIA Historic Technical Passport as well as entry to the 2025 Rolex Reunion.

Current Condition and Features

The current and consigning owner purchased this car in 2007 and has raced it extensively in numerous international events. Currently outfitted with a beautiful, accurate, and modern Olaf Kuester 2.5L alloy cast twin-cam twin-plug engine, this engine has been professionally and recently rebuilt by engine expert Rick Bunkfieldt. This 7k redline engine is not only correct and powerful, it allows for enjoyable use while preserving the matching number original Maserati engine included with the car. Today this Maserati 200Si presents in excellent condition. The stunning aluminum Fantuzzi coachwork is captivating due to the impossibly low profile, undulating fender lines, and vivid red finish. Though the restoration was performed some years ago, various aspects have been freshened under current ownership along with mechanical servicing regularly performed to meet the rigors of historic event participation. The uninterrupted body lines are accented by delicate hood louvers, distinctive side vents, covered headlights, and a long, tapering head fairing. The wide grille, side vents, and side exit exposed exhaust delivers the ultimate in performance race cars from this era. The tightly cut wheel openings and dramatic performance stance are perfectly suited to the peaked fender crowns arching over the main central body. A set of silver finished 16” Borrani wire wheels with dual ear knock offs wear Dunlop Racing 5.50 16 tires. The hood and trunk panels have excellent fit, while the hinged doors open and close with ease. The removable hood, head fairing, and trunk lid are easily removed and allow for ready access to major mechanical elements. The clear plexiglass windshield encircles the forward and side portions of the cockpit mounted to a painted alloy cowl base. The lighting and lenses, while minimal, are consistent with the integrity of the entire presentation.

Entry to the cockpit is made easier due to the hinged doors offered in the Si model. Once inside, seating position and steering wheel reach is very comfortable even for those with longer legs. The gearbox is favorably positioned, and foot pedal position is comfortable without a great deal of offset often found in cars of this period. The handsome, softly aged wood rim steering wheel, purposeful gauges, sparse interior treatment, and exposed construction make for a wonderful vintage presentation. A modern Sabelt lap belt with quick release buckle, modern Halon fire suppression system (filled June 2024), and removable roll bar, are added safety features which discretely enhance the enjoyment of this car particularly for those who will continue ongoing participation in vintage racing events. Under the trunk lid a beautifully polished riveted alloy construction fuel tank (lined with an internal fuel cell/bladder), exposed suspension, and easily accessible Optima battery make for smooth services and trackside mechanical inspections.

Underneath the removable hood, the spectacular Maserati derived engine delivers a remarkably accurate representation of the original numbers matching engine which has been removed and retained for posterity. The first impression is immediately dramatic and captivating, highlighted by twin-cam covers, twin dual-throat Weber carburetors, twin distributors, and fantastic alloy castings. The engine itself is a visual delight which delights to an entirely new level when fired off, warmed up, and revved on a snappy throttle. The engine compartment and engine features have settled consistently with the exterior restoration creating a wonderfully comfortable appearance. Raw alloy castings, black finish cam covers, proper tubular exhaust, and 45DCO3 carburetors, have all been prepared with attention to detail. The underside of the car is clean and correct including the Gilco frame, suspension, and beautiful castings further reflective of the mechanical integrity of the entire car.

Beautifully prepared and historically impressive, this Maserati 200Si comes with the original stamped 2425 Maserati engine, a Maserati Certificate of Origin, reference information supporting the history of these cars, copies of period articles on these cars, FIA papers, and numerous spare parts including a spare set of wheels and tires, a spare seat, a removable roll bar with Sabelt shoulder belts, a spare gearbox, spare differential, spare driveshaft, and numerous spare internal engine parts.
