General History

Carroll Shelby is credited with some of the most important sports cars ever built. But the beginning of his manufacturing career also involved another British/American sports car partnership. The Sunbeam Tiger provided enthusiasts a balanced lightweight platform (modified by legendary Ken Miles), a 260 and later 289 Ford V8 engine, and contemporary styling based on the proven Sunbeam Alpine.

The first Tiger was built at Shelby American, but later refined for production in England. Just over 7,000 examples were constructed between 1964 and 1967, though just 536 of the Mark II series cars were produced, aimed primarily at the US market. The Tiger was not only a refined and cleverly manufactured sports car, it proved to be highly capable in racing trim including three Tigers constructed for Le Mans, an endless series of successful Rally cars, and competitive privateer race cars both in the US and UK. Though commonly thought to be an Alpine with a performance engine, the Tiger was significantly different in construction and build including several period high-performance street and competition components offered from the Rootes Group Dealership “Los Angeles Tiger” (LAT) offered a wide array of highly desirable and rare components specifically built for these sought-after sports cars. The Mark II, the final iteration of the Tiger, is considered to be the most evolved of the Tiger series cars which benefited from the more potent 289 engine, an oil cooler, and unique design details.

History of this Tiger

The production sequence number for the Mark II begins with B382100001, making this example the 218th or 536 Mark II models built between December 1966 and Jun 1967. Assembled January 18, 1967, this car was delivered to Peter Pan Motors, San Francisco, CA and sold to the first owner, William Wohlfarth, a US Coast Guard officer and resident of California, on July 23, 1967. Finished in Mediterranean Blue with black interior and a black top, both the original window sticker and the original Peter Pan sales invoice document the purchase and are both signed by Carroll Shelby. Of these rare Mark II series cars, fewer than 400 remaining examples remain today according to Sunbeam Tiger experts. Fewer still retain the original, unrestored body, paint, matching engine, and factory interior. Every aspect of this car is not only original but in remarkably fine preserved condition and documented by the Rootes Archive Centre Trust Certificate as well as the Sunbeam Tiger Owners Association Certificate.

In addition to the contemporary era documentation supporting the factory build and subsequent ownership history, this Tiger is accompanied by the original service documents including the 500-mile break-in oil change performed at Peter Pan, traction master installation at Peter Pan, cam kit, as well as the LAT1 Super Induction Kit installation consisting of an Edelbrock high riser aluminum intake manifold and a Holley carburetor upgrade. Dual point distributor, and a LAT hood was also installed in 1967. These upgrades were all performed with less than 2,000 miles. In 1968 Peter Pan installed an aluminum oil pan and overhauled the carburetor. Remaining absolutely as original and preserved as possible, the original owner would retain his prized Tiger for 40 years before selling it to the second owner in 2005. The second owner, H. DeWayne Ashmead, a prominent performance car collector, would own the car until his estate liquidated his collection including the Tiger which advanced to the third and current owner of record who has continued in the tradition of preservation in keeping with prior ownership. In August 2025, the current owner was invited to participate in “The Quail” A Motorsports Gathering where it won the coveted Dr. Fred Simeone Preservation Award.

In addition to the original paint, original interior, and original drivetrain, this rare Tiger was optioned in period with a series of LAT (Los Angeles Tiger) features, each of which are considered impossibly rare on any single car yet are collectively included in this already impressive example.

Current Condition

Today this preservation grade Tiger Mark II displays excellent finishes throughout. The original blue finish is smooth and glossy and the unique Mark II details are very nicely finished including wheel opening trim, the unique egg-crate grille, distinctive Mark II Tiger badges, original white rocker panel stripes, and other unique features consistent with Mark II production. Although unrestored, the car exhibits remarkably fine finishes and cohesive presentation throughout the exterior. The body panels exhibit excellent fit and finish including the inner surfaces and underside panels which show only minimal signs of age. The chrome is in very good condition as are the original glass, lenses, and lighting. A black hardtop is also included with the car. The car sits perfectly on a set of period-correct and authentic Shelby wheels shod with Vredestein Sport Classic 185/70 VR13 tires installed in 2021.

The interior is excellent in every respect and remarkably so considering it is also original. A beautifully finished and correct wood rimmed steering wheel, excellent dashboard with lacquered wood finish, clear instrumentation with correct vivid nomenclature, and red needles complete the exquisite dashboard. The low bucket black seats, dash padding, and door panels are beautifully contoured with correct fit and stitching. The matching black carpet is correctly trimmed and shows only minor evidence of use in the driver’s foot well. The convertible top is also the original factory unit, and while it does have a few torn sections, it is still very nice including a slightly yellowed plastic rear window indicative of originality. The top goes up and down easily and has firm latching to the windshield header. A matching black top boot cover, ordered originally with the car when new, is included. The odometer indicates 40,275 miles which are believed to be original.

Under the hood, the correct 289 V8 has been beautifully and accurately detailed with correct features and correct accessories including rare Shelby valve covers, the correct LAT Holley carburetor and intake manifold upgrade, correct hoses, correct clamps, and proper factory finishes maintained as part of the original specifications. The underside of the LAT hood is signed by Carroll Shelby. The preserved original trunk is finished with the original blue paint and factory features, housing the battery beside the stamped steel rim spare tire nestled beneath the removable trunk floor cover.

The underside of the car reveals further evidence of exceptional preservation including suspension and engine finishes, sound untouched floors, correct suspension and brakes, and the Cobra aluminum oil pan ordered and installed in period. The exhaust correctly exits the header collectors through the X member frame sections, terminating with angled dual exhaust tips exiting at the bottom of the rear bumper. At the rear of the car, the original issue California black and yellow plate VLM 109 is yet another artifact of originality accompanying this amazing time machine Tiger.
