General History

Enjoying increased success in the new line of GT cars that evolved in the early 60s, Alfa Romeo released the first series 105/115 series coupes in 1963. Spanning a prolific 14 years in production, the model run remained largely unchanged due in part to the clean and sporting Giugiaro penned body design. As iterations unfolded, a range of engines evolved leading up to the SPICA fuel-injected 1750 GTV (Veloce) which was offered for US delivery examples. The potent 1,779cc engine was the perfect pairing for the 5-speed manual gearbox which, along with revised suspension geometry and an anti-roll bar fitted to the rear suspension, made for great road manners. Larger front disc brakes and calipers were also installed. These notable improvements made for a better handling car overall but also invited spirited highway driving making the GTV a more refined and versatile GT car as it entered the new decade.

General Overview

According to records supplied by the current owner including a 1996 teleffax from Fiat/Alfa Centro Documentazione, this Alfa Romeo was finished in Beige Cava and manufactured January 13, 1970. The letter states that Centro cannot reconcile the difference in the 1970 recorded build date with the September 1969 data plate that is affixed to the car. Under prior ownership which appears to have spanned the mid 1990s-2020, this Alfa Romeo appears to have been partially restored in 2006 including new front and rear seat upholstery, new headliner, and various mechanical improvements. By 2020 the car was serviced including rebuilding the fuel pump, new clutch slave cylinder, fuel tank reconditioning, flushing fuel lines and throttle bodies, a replacement 1971 SPICA injection pump, and new fuel lines and filters. Additional work in 2020 included door hinge repair kit, door gasket kit (L&R), body and paint, engine tune up, exhaust manifold refinishing, new crank seal, new brake master cylinder and brake booster, new axle strap, and a new rear brake caliper.

By 2021 the car under current ownership and further serviced including over $17,000 including engine work and transmission rebuild performed by Alfaman, Novato, CA. Additional work included new upper and lower ball joints, bushings, new front sway bar, front and rear Koni shocks, rebuilt rear trailing arms, rebuilt adjustable upper arms, rebuilt steering box, new 185/70 14 tires, new wiper motor, new heater motor, new front muffler, hoses, and new lines as needed. By 2022 exterior trim work was performed after the car returned from the body and paint shop where numerous Classic Alfa body, rocker, sill, and floor panels had been purchased and replaced, rust repairs performed as needed, and preparation for paint including blocking primer, finish sanding, corrosion coating, and undercoating applied to the floors as outlined in the service and parts records accompanying the car. In 2023, new black carpet was installed along with sound insulating Dynamat, new trunk liners, new door handles, various gaskets, body and door seals, and trunk seal. Work continued in 2024 including new upper interior wood veneer, a new heater bezel, and new three-point front seat belts, followed by a new Bosch fuel pump, oil and filter change, cold start adjustment, and other services performed in 2025 with 95,604 miles indicated on the odometer.

Current Condition

Today this Alfa Romeo offers handsome finishes throughout. The recent body and paint was professionally done, and the finishes have been properly maintained since the restoration was completed just three years ago. The various trim and exterior features are in excellent condition including the distinctive details for this series Alfa. The lenses, lighting, bumpers, and Alfa Romeo script are also in excellent condition contributing to the satisfying visual presentation. The body panel gaps are consistent showing good closures and tight fit, including both doors which open and shut smoothly. A set of rare and desirable period correct ERA Basket Mesh wheels are mounted with Luaffen 185/70R14 tires.

The interior features very nice black bucket seats recovered with high-quality materials, accurate perimeter piping, taut fit over proper foam padding, correct woven inserts, and matching rear seating. The overall interior presents very well reflecting a high-quality restoration performed by knowledgeable Alfa Romeo experts. The door panels, various interior chrome trim, and rear side panels have a very high-quality feel to the finishes, the carpeting is in excellent condition, and the wood inserts for the dash and center console are also exceptionally nice. The dashboard is excellent, featuring clean and detailed gauges with excellent color, striking contrast and clear numeric indication. The black dash padding is also in excellent condition. A sporty black rim Alfa Romeo branded steering wheel finishes off the correctly restored interior. The center console features a desirable 5-speed manual gear selector, smaller gauges, and various toggle switches. The trunk is clean and well-maintained, finished with a newer trunk mat and a full-sized stamped steel spare tire located in the lower tub.

Under the hood, the engine bay delivers a correct presentation reflective of original specifications and finishes that have mellowed over time. The twin-cam fuel-injected engine and engine compartment appear correct including a properly finished 1750 SPICA airbox, raw aluminum twin-cam cover, a 2023 dated battery, and various details consistent with Alfa Romeo manufacturing during this period. The undercarriage reflects a combination of correct vintage Alfa engine and gearbox castings, newer replacement parts including new mufflers, Koni shock absorbers, several rebuilt suspension components, and various new lines, hoses, and replacement rocker panels.

The car starts, stops, runs, and drives very capably as evidenced in the driving video accompanying the photos in the gallery. The gearbox operates properly, the clutch takes up nicely, and the brakes bring the car down smoothly and evenly on a firm pedal. Acceleration is progressive from the SPICA 1750 engine offering a balanced feel especially notable in the improved suspension offered in these later series cars.
