History of the 993

An instant classic, the 993 generation Porsche 911 continues to remain one of the most sought-after models, decades after introduction. As the last of the air-cooled 911s, the 993 represents the most developed of the original formula that first appeared in 1963. The layout of the instruments, the body design, and the entire greenhouse is thematically unchanged from the original 911, blending the essence of the original with the finest in modern technology. These cars have a feeling of solidity and craftsmanship that departed entirely in the 996 generation, which replaced the 993, but has been missing from almost every version made in the ensuing decades since.

Yet despite this heritage architecture and bespoke craftsmanship, the 993 is impressively modern, even 25 years after its introduction. The sophisticated multilink rear suspension and massive rear tires make the rear placement of the engine a non-issue, while the twin plug 3.6 liter flat-6 is a torquey high-performance unit that is both tractable and full of character. The brakes, always a Porsche strong suit, are superb, and with the sophisticated Tiptronic 4-speed automatic, comfortable performance with the ease of automatic shifting combined with shift lever activated manual shifting delivers consistent and desirable performance. Sophisticated and high performing but also capturing the essence of the original 911, the 993 is the best of both worlds, making them true classics that can be driven and enjoyed daily in modern traffic.

History of this Porsche 993

According to the Porsche Owner’s Manual dealer stamp and Carfax history, this Carrera Coupe first sold through a Charlotte, NC dealer with delivery inspection April 9, 1997. The car was then titled as a corporate vehicle where it resided in California until 1999 when ownership was updated in Las Vegas, Nevada with service stamp August 17, 1999, with 2,845 miles where the car passed emissions, and again passed in 2000 with 7,099 miles. The car remained in Las Vegas accruing consecutive miles as logged on the current Carfax with annual emissions inspections until July 2013 when it was sold to the current owner with 20,568 miles indicated. Under current ownership fluid services have been regular including selected maintenance as needed and a new set of tires in December 2024. The current owner has covered approximately 14,000 miles during their 12 years of ownership.

Copies of service records dating back to 2009 are included with the car. Under current ownership, services of note include:

June 2013, 20,510 miles – oil and filter change and general inspection

January 2915 – new remote and spare key

June 2017, 26,935 miles – oil and filter change, brake fluid flush

April 2020, 29,035 miles – oil and filter, air filters, cabin filters, valve cover gaskets replaced, fuel fitter, new valve cover bolts, spark plugs, new chain studs installed, sublet speedometer to repair odometer roller guides.

December 2024, 34,518 miles – New Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 front 225.40 ZR18 and 285/30 ZR18 rear tires.

Current Condition

Today, this Porsche presents beautifully with original factory silver paint that is exceptionally well preserved and glossy throughout. The finish has been metered with a digital paint meter, returning single digit numbers on all metal body panels. The body is in excellent condition with just a few minor paint imperfections consistent with the low miles. The body panels display excellent factory door, trunk, and hood gaps with factory fit along the front and rear bumpers, excellent lenses, and original factory glass. The hollow spoke turbo twist wheels are in excellent condition with no curb rash and beautiful finishes fitted with a set of Michelin tires purchased in 2024. Both the power activated sunroof and rear wing function smoothly. Of note, the wider rear wheel arches and clean front and rear bumpers give this Carrera S coupe fantastic presence.

The original interior is in excellent condition, reflective of the low original miles. The leather covered, hard shell, power adjustable Sport Seats are very nicely preserved as are the dash, console, and door panels. The center console features the original radio and optional CD audio, a premium feature for 1997. The console also features the automatic gear selector which can be used manually to engage sport shifting via Porsche’s state of the art Tiptronic technology. The dashboard, gorgeous instruments, and center console are all in excellent condition with all switches and functions operating as expected. The headliner, sun visors, and carpeting also offer excellent visual presentation. The overall fit and finish of the interior is fresh, cohesive, and exhibits all the traits of a properly maintained and carefully preserved low mile Porsche.

The engine compartment and trunk are both unmodified and visually consistent with the miles indicated. The original engine is correct and properly maintained offering more torque and power than the early 993 motors. The front storage compartment retains the original materials and factory finishes including the collapsible red rim spare tire, proper black molded components, VIN, factory paint sticker, factory treated metal parts, and correct hardware.

The car starts instantly and idles smoothly, owing in part to the low miles and consistent care throughout the current and prior owners. The motor provides wonderful induction sounds, and the performance is robust with surprising ease of manual shifting via the Tiptronic transmission. The suspension retains the much lauded 911 character with easily modulated brakes on a firm pedal. The chassis is delightfully 911, tight, and authentic, showing no evidence of structural compromise when inspecting the underside.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a low mileage, well maintained and handsomely optioned example of one of Porsche’s most desirable Carreras. Finished in elegant silver with black leather interior, Sport Seats, premium audio, and sunroof, this Porsche Carrera S Coupe is ready to deliver all the pleasure of Porsche ownership, style, and performance.
