Description

1958 Porsche 356A Sunroof Coupe
s/n 103865, Engine no. P*69976*
Turquoise with Tan Leather Interior

Porsche introduced the A version of the 356 just as the company was coming into its own as an independent sports car manufacturer. They had just completed their 10,000th car, and with racing efforts gaining momentum, it was clear that Porsche was a force to be reckoned with. At this time, the street car model line was diversified to include a variety of body styles and engines, with the most potent non-racing engine being the Super, initially in 1500 form, and later in 1600 form. The 356A has an aesthetic purity that has made it among the most sought after early Porsches, while the traditional Porsche values of craftsmanship, engineering, and focus on driving are beautifully articulated in these cars.

This particular car is a factory sunroof coupe that retains its matching numbers engine per the included Certificate of Authenticity. Originally finished in Fjord Green, the car was restored in a striking shade of turquoise and is a very well-sorted car that is a pleasure to drive. A later 741 transmission was installed, which enhances usability and durability, which was done by 356 specialist Ted Blake in 2007. The original nose cone and shift linkage were retained so that the appearance in the car is unaltered. An original 1957 dated transmission is also available with the car. The car has covered less than 5000 miles since this work was done. During this period, the engine was also freshened with new big bore pistons and cylinders and rebuilt cylinder heads. The engine was deon by Jim Hardie and the heads by Nathan Girolomy. A new clutch and electric fuel pump were also installed.

The car makes a strong cosmetic impression. The body is straight and solid throughout. The panel fit is very good across the board, other than the front deck lid, which sits a bit proud. The paint is glossy but does have some orange peel, surface imperfections, and some chips to the front of the car from road use. The chrome is excellent with very light surface swirls but no pitting of significance. The lights and lenses are excellent throughout, as is the glass aside from the front windscreen, which has some wear from road use but no stars or cracks.

The interior was correctly restored to high standards and is in great shape with excellent square weave carpets and rubber floor mats. The seats were reupholstered in leather and are in excellent shape with light creasing only. The door panels are similarly nice, as is the headliner, which is of the correct perforated material and is in as-new condition. The instruments and dashboard are excellent, and the car is equipped with period Blaupunkt radio.

The engine was removed from the car and restored to high standards, and presents correctly and beautifully. It is extremely clean and has correct details such as the decals on the oil filter housing and fan shroud, as well as Knecht air filter housings and stock carburetors. The engine compartment was not restored when the engine was, but is attractive and tidy. The trunk is also fundamentally unrestored, although the fuel tank and associated components were restored and are in as new condition. The car also has its windscreen washer fluid bag, spare wheel, and factory jack.

The car is a pleasure to drive. The engine starts easily and is well-tuned, making good power which is delivered in a linear and predictable fashion. The transmission works extremely well, with excellent synchromesh. The brakes stop the car evenly and the chassis and suspension are taught and precise, providing the famous Porsche solidity and precision in its handling.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a great-driving and attractive 356A Coupe with factory sunroof and original engine. Structurally solid and mechanically sorted, this car would be an ideal event car thanks to its weather protection, fantastic curb appeal, and as a 356A, it should be eligible for the most prestigious events including the California Mille. The car comes with spare, jack, and Certificate of Authenticity.
