Ferdinand Porsche’s first roadgoing model bearing his own name was the 356. Introduced in 1948, it underwent continuous development during the production run, which finally ended in 1965. By production’s end, the car had come a long way. Engine power output more than doubled, from 40hp at introduction to just shy of 100hp in the last examples. The ultimate development from these years was the 356 C, which represented huge advances over earlier models, including the adoption of disc brakes. The 356C was available in both coupe and cabriolet form, each with several motors. Aside from cars fitted the complicated four-cam racing motors, the SC the top of the range in terms of performance, with its more sporting suspension and more powerful motor.

This particular car is a very late production example, having been completed on the 31st of March, 1965, and is one of only approximately 200 SC’s produced in 1965. The last 356C was completed on the 28th of April 1965, so this car is less than a month away from the end of production. It is a genuine matching numbers SC, and is finished in its original colors, as confirmed by its Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche. The certificate also indicates the following options: 1 headrest, 2nd seat prepared for headrest, tinted glass all around, wheel caps with crest, 1 exterior mirror, black suitcase (no longer with car), and Michelin tires. This car was sold new at Brumos Porsche of Jacksonville, Florida, and remained in the south for most of its life. It was in the care of one owner in Georgia for 25 years before being recently restored.

The restoration included the following items: repaint entire car, new windscreen, reupholster front seats, door panels and dashboard top, new tires, engine rebuild, rebuilt front brake calipers, new pads all round, new shock absorbers, restored fuel tank, rebuilt carburetors, new rubber seals throughout, new bumper guards, new engine compartment insulation.

The car is in handsome cosmetic condition, having recently received a driver quality restoration. The paint is glossy and the car displays very nice door fit. The chrome was mostly redone, including the bumper over-riders, door handles, headlight rims, and hub caps. Some areas such as the window trims are unrestored and are very good considering the existence of some light pitting and scratching. The badges and trim are all intact and excellent, including the color crests on the hub caps.

The interior was nicely restored, with new carpet, headliner, and upholstery. The upholstery is tidy throughout, and the dashboard top was redone as well. The dashboard was restored, and instruments and steering wheel are in very nice condition. The carpets are excellent, as is the headliner. A removable period style roll bar was added to provide additional protection if desired.

The engine compartment and trunk are both fresh and correct in appearance. The engine has most of the correct fittings and equipment, including Knecht air filters and various decals. The engine compartment has the appearance of a well looked after, unrestored car. The trunk is also quite correct in appearance, with correct plastic tray, air intakes, and leather spare tire restraining strap. The undercarriage is in good order. The engine and transmission are quite clean and show signs of recent maintenance. Close inspection of the floor pan reveals minor corrosion repairs, but they appear to be solid and free of corrosion at this time.

The car runs and drives extremely well. It starts immediately and the engine runs with vigor, making good power and no smoke. The transmission works smoothly and the brakes are effective, pulling the car up straight. The car rides firmly and the chassis feels solid. Overall, the car is a pleasure to drive.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a very desirable car. A very late production disc brake genuine SC in its original colors with matching numbers; this car has a high potential for collectability. The Porsche, s/n 222467, is an excellent running and driving example with an ideal driver quality restoration, making it an exemplar of the 356 series.
