The legendary Carrera RS is widely regarded to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest roadgoing Porsche ever. Certainly it is one of the most iconic. Its primary purpose was to homologate the car for competition use, which required the construction of a minimum of five hundred examples within twelve months. Eventually, the cars proved to be so popular that the production run was expanded several times, with an eventual total of 1580 cars being built. The cars themselves featured larger more powerful engines, flared rear wheel arches to accommodate wider wheels, numerous deletions and alterations to reduce weight, improved suspension, and a few cosmetic alterations, which together would become the car's trademark. With its distinctive contrasting striping and wheels and the simple and functional 'burzel' or ducktail, the styling of the RS is iconic and trend-setting. The real treat, however, is in the driving. It epitomizes the ultimate Porsche experience with its immense tactility, balance, and nimbleness. Very few cars are as communicative and engaging as a properly set up 911 of this vintage, especially a Carrera RS.
This particular car is a fascinating 4-owner RS with known history back to new. The car was sold new to Karl Conrad, an employee of Porsche from 1958 to 1976, who kept the car until the late 1980s. The car received a factory replacement engine in 1975 after the original pulled a head stud. The transmission was also replaced during this period and since both the engine and transmission were factory replacements, both are factory unstamped cases. Additionally, the car was repainted from its original light yellow to silver in 1976 at the factory, a virtually unseen color on the RS due to the initial difficulty adhering metallic paint to the fiberglass bodywork components unique to the RS. Conrad brought the car to the United States when he moved here in 1980 and in December 1988 sold the car to a doctor in Georgia who kept the until 1996. The car was stripped and repainted in 1992.
Its next owner kept the car until 1999, at which point he traded it for cash and a 1974 Carrera, to its next keeper, who owned the car for 15 years. He enthusiastically kept the car, replacing wear items as required with NOS Porsche parts, and adding a set of original upholstery houndstooth factory Recaro sport seats. He has shown the car over the years in PCA Concours events and won several first place awards with the car.
Today, the car is an attractive high end driver with high quality paint in very nice condition. Aside from a few chips from road use, the paint shows virtually no wear or aging. The body is straight and solid with excellent fit and gaps. The bright trim is very good to excellent, with minor wear and aging only. The glass and lights are excellent aside from some delamination at the bottom corners of the front windscreen. The car is equipped with Cibié auxiliary lamps as well as through the grille Hella fog lamps. The wheels have been restored by Al Weidman using the attractive RSR finish and are in excellent shape.
The interior is in excellent condition. The dashboard is free of cracking and warping, and the instruments and controls are in very good to excellent condition. The car is equipped with 300kph speedometer and also has its correct RS small diameter steering wheel and correct type yellow stitch seat belts. The seats are excellent factory genuine original upholstery Recaro items with houndstooth inserts. There is one small split to the upholstery on the driver’s seat bolster. The carpets are excellent, as are the often deteriorated door panels and door pockets. The headliner is in very nice condition and appears as though it could be original.
The engine compartment presents extremely crisply, with excellent cosmetics and extremely clean presentation. It appears that much recent cadmium plating has been performed, and the presentation of the engine is universally impressive, being at or near show level in just about every regard. The front compartment is also very nice with excellent carpet and very nice inner fenders. The car comes with Certificate of Authenticity, owner’s manual with RS supplement, and tool roll with tools, and documentation back to the late 1980s.
The car run and drives well, with crisp and responsive motor that is well-tuned and eager. The gearbox is excellent, being one of the best 915s we have come across in recent years. The clutch is a pleasure to use and the steering is light and precise, although the car would likely benefit from an alignment as it pulls to the right. The suspension keeps the car well-controlled but isn’t excessively harsh, and there is a wonderfully coherent precise feel to the car that reminds the driver why the RS is such a legend. These cars are very much about impressing the driver and being used.
This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a well-sorted and obviously loved RS that is uniquely equipped and finished. A silver car with auxiliary lamps, and houndstooth sport seats, this RS stands out even among the distinguished company of the Carrera RS. It is a high end driver that is perfect to enjoy, being quite striking but not so crisp and freshly restored that driving it would spoil it. It is also quite complete, which coupled with the lovely driving experience, make it a true enthusiast’s car.
