General History
Since its introduction the Porsche 911 Turbo (also known as the 930) has continued to reign as an icon of performance supremacy. After unprecedented success pioneering turbocharged engines in the 917 Can Am and 911-based sports cars, Porsche shocked the sports car world, developing a reliable and capable turbocharged road car for the consumer market. Contemporary road tests battled for superlatives regarding the effortless speed and deceptive composure the Turbo achieved. The 930 quickly distinguished itself among the supercar elite, placing Porsche in this lofty category, far above the rather sedate offerings of that era.
The 930 Impact was even more impressive as production cars hit the streets, while competition Porsche Turbos were cleaning up on the racetrack. The 930's lurid fender flares and rear spoiler gave the car a distinctive and aggressive presence, gracing cover after cover of top performance magazines. Initially available in a non-intercooled 3.0 liter variant, a 3.3 liter intercooled variant superseded the 3.0 for the 1978 model year. By 1980, US laws prevented further sale of the 930 by Porsche North America. It was not until 1986 when the incorporation of an oxygen sensor, electronic assistance for the mechanical fuel injection system, and a three-way catalytic converter permitted these glorious cars to return to the US. Thus, the market for US cars expanded, heralding the 930 return to North America where it has continued to impress generations of sports car enthusiasts.
History of This Example
Delivered new to the first owner via Porsche Tourist Shipping Program, this 930 Porsche was sold to Jim Stockton, Dallas, TX, processed November 10, 1986. The delivery order and window sticker reflect the car was optioned with left and right heated seats, a raised hub steering wheel, and limited slip differential. No charge options included sport seats, sunroof, gravel protection, and painted wheel hubs (Y5Y5). Ordered with special paint “Meteor Grey” the car was finished with burgundy red leather interior resulting in a fantastic and unique color combination.
According to the Carfax and service records, the first owner retained the car in Dallas, TX recording oil changes and various services at 36k and 40k, and in 2002 with 97,880 miles had the car serviced before selling to the second owner, James Marshall, Ennis, TX. Marshall had the car serviced in 2005 with 102,904 miles spending $2400.00 for various maintenance items. In 2013 the car arrived in Northern California where it was tested for California emissions with 103,401 miles indicated at the testing station. As the third owner of record, the current owner had a post-purchase inspection performed including an oil change. During that time the current owner replaced the deflector, replaced the front and rear hood shocks, removed the speedometer (serviced the original unit at North Hollywood Speedometer), replaced the passenger side window switch and door lock motor rod, and new Bridgestone Potenza tires installed.
In March 2014, the current owner engaged Retro Sport in Berkeley, CA to rebuild the engine. Among the details described in the invoice, the heads were rebuilt and ported, new pistons and cylinder set (3.3 to 3.4 Liter, 98mm, Long Skirt 7.5:1 compression), Elgin cam with regrind to owner specs, 11 blade cooling fan, and various engine accessory parts refinished including powder coating for the engine tin. While the engine was out, the gearbox was serviced with new shift coupler bushing, and the shift tower was rebuilt with new bushings. Later that same year the turbo was removed and sent out for rebuild.
In June 2020 the car returned to Retro Sport for $6,000.00 worth of work including work on the turbocharger, oil lines, engine testing for emissions including new vacuum lines for air injection and distributor, new AC compressor, AC receiver dryer, and O-rings, resetting of the air fuel mixture, a new oil cooler fan, various hoses, and a new auxiliary air valve.
Cosmetic presentation
Today this Porsche presents as a very well-preserved 930 Turbo. Despite showing 110k miles, the overall condition is surprisingly nice. The paint has been digitally metered showing original paint and panels with the exception of the hood and driver’s front fender which reflect numbers consistent with a single repaint on original panels. The body is straight with excellent panel gaps and smooth operation (closure and latching) form doors, hood, and deck lid. Overall, the glossy and well-detailed exterior finish reflects the history of careful ownership and proper service. Close inspection of the glass, rubber trim, gaskets, black fender join trim, bumper trim, and trademark rear wing rubber, all deliver a very satisfying visual impression.
The interior is in excellent original condition showing beautifully preserved finishes, which have certainly been enjoyed, but remain properly preserved. The heated front sport seats are in excellent condition and the dashboard shows no cracks or abrasions, while the gauges and switches are factory correct with vivid color, bright needles, and exceptional detailing. The interior door panels and headliner are in excellent condition including the operational sunroof, while the rear seats appear to have never been used judging by the near new finish to the leather.
The engine compartment has benefited from the 2014 rebuild and recent services in 2020. The cosmetic finishes throughout are clean and properly detailed with originality in mind. The front storage compartment is pleasingly original with very clean factory carpet and all structural elements beneath the carpets appearing just as they left the factory. The correct spare tire and tool roll are present with the car, also in excellent condition. The underside of the car is clean, dry, and while it does show signs of use, there is no visual evidence of compromise to the floor or suspension mounting points.
This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a properly serviced 930 ready to enjoy. The detailed maintenance history, remarkable condition, and visual presentation make this an exceptional candidate for enthusiasts who enjoy driving and showing their cars.
Included with the car
The car is offered with a set of Porsche logo floor mats, copies of selected service records, copies of the original purchase order, shipping documents, order processing paperwork, a set of tools in a very nice pouch, owner’s manual and warranty and maintenance books in the original factory folio case, and two sets of keys.
