History of the 993 Turbo
The Porsche 993 Turbo is considered a hallmark of performance excellence. Offering the best in air-cooled Turbo development, the specifications chase their genetic origins to the legendary 959. The ground-breaking Porsche 959 stunned the motoring world in 1986 offering remarkable performance features such as a 6-speed manual gearbox, all-wheel drive, twin turbochargers, and 400+ hp, all of which resulted in 4 second 0-60 times. A decade later the 993 offered all this and more in a performance package that could be driven with confidence and reliability. The 993 would set a high mark for Porsche, eventually becoming the final and most refined iteration of the original air-cooled 911, delivering performance excellence in both driving characteristics and body design. Today, Porsche enthusiasts favor the 993 for the familiar dashboard layout, signature 911 greenhouse, material technology, and aerodynamic improvements, all while retaining legendary Porsche engineering and iconic design features.
Introduced in 1995, the Turbo Coupe offered the all new 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged engine, air-to-air intercoolers, electronic engine management, new cylinder heads, and a 959-derived all-wheel drive system. The rear fenders were widened, and the front and rear fascia were redesigned to create a unique and dynamic visual presence. A fixed rear spoiler contained the impressive intercooler, fluidly draped over the wide engine lid. The Turbo models were outfitted with larger brakes than the standard Carrera and a 10-speaker stereo system was installed for premium sounds, as though anything could compete with the incomparable roar of the legendary air-cooled Porsche Turbo engine.
History of this Porsche Turbo
According to the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity accompanying this car, this Porsche was completed September 28, 1995. Finished in Speed Yellow and trimmed with classic black leather interior, this exceptional example was ordered with the following cost-added optional equipment:
- 6 Disc Remote CD Player
- Self-Dimming Mirrors & Rain Sensor
- Racing Style Sport Seat L/R
- Bridgestone Tires
The first owner, a resident of Hemet, CA elected to have the car delivered via Porsche’s Tourist Delivery Program, allowing him to take delivery in Germany as part of the Porsche purchase European driving experience. The Porsche Tourist Delivery Return Shipment Voucher is signed September 29, 1995, with delivery designated to Charleston, SC. Signed transit orders indicate October 13, 1995, with transit timing offered through December 11, 1995. The first owner enjoyed driving the car through Europe and completed shipment through European Coordinator Schenker & Co GMBH, eventually arriving in California where, according to the Carfax, the car was first titled with registration recorded on December 6, 1995, with 977 miles indicated. In February 1997, the second owner was recorded with 1,349 miles. By 2010, 2,930 miles were recorded for a California emissions inspection followed by regular maintenance and services performed by Newport Auto Center in Newport Beach, CA where the car accumulated the majority of its documented miles. By March 2012, 6,804 miles were recorded when the car was sold to the third owner, a resident of Seattle, WA. During the third owner’s 15-month ownership approximately 300 more miles were added. In the spring of 2013, renowned Porsche experts at Canepa Design, Scotts Valley, CA, fully detailed and serviced the car prior to offering it for sale. While at Canepa, the steering rack was replaced, both turbo chargers were re-sealed, and the turbo supply lines and check valves were updated to eliminate syphoning. The lower portion of the front chin spoiler, having minor cosmetic imperfections from general road use, was repainted with base and clear.
In July 2013, with 7,085 miles indicated, the fourth and current owner purchased this car from Canepa Design. With the utmost in preservation and detailing in mind, the current owner has committed to minimal use while maintaining the car to an exceptional level. In October 2013, a Bilstein PSS10 front and rear Coil Over Kit was installed, the suspension was set to Euro M030 specs, and the engine deck lid struts were installed. In September 2021, both left & right ARB links and dust boots were replaced. In July 2022, a new set of Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires were installed along with a new battery in June 2023. Regular services, fluid changes, and mechanical inspections have been performed by Steve De Jung at De Jung Mortorsport in Cotati, CA.
Condition and Presentation
Today, with 8,950 miles indicated on the six-digit odometer, this Porsche 993 Turbo presents beautifully. Finishes throughout the car have been maintained to a very high level reflective of preservation grade excellence as found in premium finish show cars. The factory original Speed Yellow paint displays excellent depth and high gloss throughout the exterior surface. The paint has been metered on all metal body surfaces returning single digit numbers consistent with factory original paint. The body panels show excellent door, trunk, and hood gaps, excellent fit along the front and rear bumpers, and beautiful exterior trim. Enthusiasts familiar with this series Porsche will appreciate the exceptionally fine preserved black anodized and matte black finishes which appear essentially as new. The front bumper and hood are in excellent condition with no scrape marks on the front air dam. The lenses are clear and polished with no fading or surface scratches. The original factory glass retains the factory Sigla and Sekurit brand etches with no marks or chips, consistent with the low miles indicated on the odometer. The silver wheels with optional Porsche crest center caps are in excellent condition, accented by red brake calipers perched over the larger Turbo four-wheel ventilated disc brakes.
The gorgeous original Classic Black leather interior has been expertly maintained and thoughtfully preserved, showing almost no use on the driver’s seat entry bolster. The contoured Sport Seats are covered in supple leather and accented by yellow seat stitching, all of which remains supple and smooth to the touch. The door panels, including door handles and door pocket lids are in nearly perfect condition. The dashboard, gorgeous Porsche instruments, and center console are in excellent condition with switches and features operating as expected. The headliner, sun visors, and control surfaces are all impeccably clean and detailed. The overall fit and finish of the interior is indicative of the exceptional care this Porsche has received since being delivered new.
The engine compartment and front storage area are both unmodified and remain in excellent condition. The original engine is correct and properly maintained with clean components and factory engine stickers still in place along the rear cowling of the engine compartment. Correct materials and finishes are seen throughout the front storage area including the still new collapsible red-rim spare tire, correct and original front storage liner, factory options sticker mounted under the front lid, factory treated metal parts, and correct hardware.
The chassis and underside components have been meticulously detailed by the current owner, solely by hand. Untouched by abrasive high-pressure washes or dry ice cleaning tools, the owner has carefully removed road dust and hand polished painted surfaces with near molecular levels of attention. The floor pan, rocker panels, and suspension show no visual evidence of structural compromise, consistent with zero reported accidents in the Carfax report. The chassis displays visual condition consistent with the documented low miles, showing meticulous components and authentic, original finishes reflective of mild use, preservation-based care, and indoor storage.
The car starts instantly, warm or cold, as one might expect for such a well-preserved car. The engine offers brilliant, air-cooled sounds from the dual exit exhaust. Driving position is excellent with vivid Speed Yellow fenders stretched out in front of your view of the road. The original clutch takes up properly on starts and engages smoothly with the potential to unleash a torrent of turbocharged energy. Despite releasing 408hp, the gearbox shifts with ease and composure while the turbocharged engine provides legacy engagement at every sensory level, befitting more than half a century of Porsche air-cooled racing technology. Even by modern standards this Turbo delivers a remarkably crisp yet vintage 911 feel, beautifully harmonized with modern four-wheel drive and multilink LSA rear suspension.
This Porsche Turbo comes with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, car cover, a set of factory books in leather case, owner’s manual, two keys and a Porsche key fob, a safety triangle and case, a factory air compressor and case, tool roll with correct and complete tools, and a factory jack kit with bag.
A stunning, investment grade Porsche Turbo, with original finishes, low miles, and consummate care, this example is truly representative of one of the most desirable Porsches built, and the last of the air-cooled giants of the 20th Century 911. This Porsche is ready for the next fortunate owner to show, drive, or further preserve one of the finest 993s in existence today. The remarkably preserved cosmetics, unmistakable performance, and rarity of this Turbo make it the ideal sports car for enthusiasts who enjoy the very best.
