Marking Maserati’s return to the US market after an 11 year absence, the 4.2 liter Coupe was a much more exciting and dynamic car than the Biturbos that had last represented the marque in the US. Styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro and powered by a larger displacement cross plane crankshaft version of the 8 cylinder engine of the Ferrari 360,the car was a proper Italian touring car that was elegant and capable. The engine is a sophisticated all alloy quad cam unit with 4 valves per cylinder and dry sump lubrication and chain driven camshafts, which eliminates the costly belt services required of Ferraris of the same period. The ultimate version was the Gran Sport, which was introduced in 2005 as the most sporting and aggressive Maserati then on offer. It was differentiated from the standard coupe by its lowered and more aggressive suspension settings, less restrictive exhaust and intake systems (which contributed to a more aggressive sound and increased power), quicker shifting transmission, bigger wheels and tires, mesh grille, revised body cladding and rear spoiler, and carbon fiber interior trim and sill plates.

This particular example is an extremely clean 15,000 mile car that has belonged to wealthy collectors in recent years, and seen minimal use. It has been in Arizona and California, and is in excellent shape. The paintwork and body are both extremely nice, and the paint is a striking metallic black with subtle greenish gold overtones. The paintwork is excellent, with only a handful of small blemishes. The body is also excellent, as is the trim. The wheels are very nice, with minor kerb rash on the front right and left rear wheels only. The lights and glass are excellent, and the car’s overall presentation is consistent with that of an extremely clean carefully enjoyed and stored car.

The interior is equally nice, with only the slightest of wear on the driver’s seat. The leather is otherwise like new, as are the carpets and dashboard. The intstruments are excellent, and the car displays great detailing such as the sewn leather headliner and headrests embossed with the Maserati Trident. As a Gran Sport, this car also has carbon fiber interior trim (including the entire door sill kick plates), which covers the steering wheel and center console. The engine compartment and trunk are both extremely clean and original in appearance and configuration, consistent with a low mileage properly cared for car.

This is a great opportunity to acquire a very nice example of the most desirable variant of the Maserati Coupe. Incorporating the ingredients of a modern Italian exotic, such as performance, engineering, and style, these cars represent a terrific value. Properly cared for, the car is extremely clean and ready to enjoy, and comes with manual pouch and miscellaneous invoices.
