1973 Porsche 911T Coupe
s/n 9113102929, Engine no.6135294
Silver with Black Interior

Early 911s embody a combination that is rare among collector cars today. They have unparalleled drivability and usability, especially when compared with other cars of the same vintage, but are also wholly evocative of a different era. There is a certain wholeness, cohesiveness, agility, and communicativeness that is only evident when they are driven, and it is no surprise that they have a fanatical following. For many years, however, they were just used cars, which makes finding genuinely solid examples which have been continuously cared throughout the car's life difficult today. All early 911s have appreciated tremendously in recent years and the late cars (1972 and 1973), which are fitted with 2.4 liter engines, are the ultimate development of the 'long hood' 911.

This particular car is reported to be a 27,000 mile car that is substantially unrestored aside from a repaint and a painstaking engine rebuild. The engine was rebuilt by Harry Hayashi, the highly regarded longtime Porsche specialist who owns Pacific Motors in San Francisco, California. Its owner reports that he purchased the car from its original owner. A close inspection by knowledgeable Early 911S short hood experts confirms that this is an exceedingly correct, honest, and attractive example.

The body is straight and solid with very good gaps and panel fit. The body is extremely solid and free of corrosion, and the car was Ziebarted early in its life. The car appears to retain its original paintwork. Most of the panels read 5.5 to 8.5 when measuring with a paint thinness gauge. The chrome and bright trim are very nice throughout. The wheels appear never to have been refinished and are in very good unrestored condition, with a correct matte finish rather than the polished finish present on most restored Fuchs. The car has factory chrome wheel arch trims and the correct factory Hirschmann antenna, and has been fitted with European rear lenses and H4 headlights. The car also has a complete clear bra on the front fenders, front deck lid, and bumper above the deco strip. It covers the entire panels so it is only visible upon extremely close examination instead of forming an unsightly line across the hood and fenders. There are numerous correct touches that speak to the car’s originality, including orange bar hood crest and black finish behind the horn grilles (often painted body color during restorations).

The theme of correctness continues in the interior, which is in excellent shape. The upholstery, carpets, dashboard, and headliner are excellent. The correct velour carpets are equally nice, and areas such as the seat rails distinguish this car as an exceptionally clean example. Original cadmium-plated double seat washers are in place, and the car has factory door speaker grilles and a Becker Europa radio. The steering wheel and instruments are extremely clean and the dashboard is free of warping, cracking, or discoloration. The overall impression of the interior is extremely strong.

The engine compartment is absolutely stunning. The owner reports that the engine rebuild required more than two years and the finished result is a testament to that. The fasteners, trim, brackets, and other components were replated, replaced, refinished, or otherwise restored. The fan shroud is pristine, the hardware presents beautifully, and the entire engine and engine compartment is highly detailed. The motor mounts have correct black hardware and the presentation of the engine is equally strong from underneath the car, with a superb level of detail to the engine, suspension hardware, and the floor pans, which were carefully cleaned. The correct hand-painted blackout stripe is present on the side of the floor pans, which was applied at the factory but is not usually reproduced on restored cars. The owner reports that the undercarriage was not refinished but instead was painstakingly cleaned with lemon juice to remove undercoating while leaving the original factory paint intact. The black suspension components were repainted, the hardware replated, and most of the undercarriage sympathetically detailed to high standards.

The trunk is extremely clean and appears to be unrestored, retaining the correct black tar finish to the shock tower and black putty at the front of the shock tower boxes. Additionally, the latch hardware correctly displays torque stripe paint on one of the three bolts. The charcoal canister is also present still, along with Fuchs spare. The structural components are in excellent shape, as is the carpet, which retains its wood stiffening board. The shut faces and jambs are in excellent shape as well.

The car is an absolute riot to drive, with performance that rivals, and dare we suggest, exceeds that of an RS. The specification of the motor is unclear but the car absolutely flies. At the same time, it is tremendously tractable, wonderfully tuned, responsive and generally magical, with a glorious rush of power at nearly any RPM, which makes the car genuinely quick in just about any situation. Driven back to back against a 911T with RS spec motor, this car is faster and has better power delivery as well. The chassis and suspension are tight, although on the stiff side, particularly the damping, which causes a bit of pogo action at low speeds over some bumps. The brakes work exactly as they should, with the right amount of travel before they bite, and a user-friendly easy to modulate character. The transmission has excellent synchromesh and the clutch grabs positively with good grab low in the travel.

This car will appeal to the seasoned and knowledgeable 911 connoisseur. An exceptionally unmolested and correct car in what appears to be its original paintwork, this is an example that will attract an admiring crowd at Porsche events because so many of the details that are lost as cars deteriorate or are restored are still intact. And once all that is over, the owner will enjoy one the best-driving early 911s that we have ever come across. Although the mileage is not documented, it is certainly believable from looking at the car, and it has clearly been owned by enthusiasts who believed in conserving this exceptionally correct car. It is truly a reference grade car, and as such, it would be extremely difficult to find another car of this caliber.
