General History

Few symbols of American prestige and motoring excellence can exceed the distinctive and classic Cadillac. Built when America was emerging from The Great Depression, 1940s Cadillacs were packed with luxury, power, supple suspension, offering prestige and exclusivity to those seeking the very best in American motoring. Cleverly designed with removable B-Posts, the stately four-door convertible delivered great visibility and impressive ride quality in a surprisingly robust package. The stylish lines, low profile windshield, and commanding streamlined body with chrome features resulted in one of the most impressively modern pre-war cars ever built.

History of This Car

Restored to an exceptionally high standard and a former Grand National Show 1st place winner, multiple concours winner, and lead car for the 1997 Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, CA, this Cadillac is very likely among the very best four-door convertibles remaining in the world today. One of just 400 produced and documented with a copy of the build sheet, the current family owners have both restored and subsequently enjoyed this car for the past 36 years. Restored by Cadillac expert Penn Lennson in the early 1990s, the restoration took two years and 1,300 man-hours to complete. Every detail was addressed to absolute perfection which was rewarded with accolades including:

1st place 1999 Grand National First prize Cadillac LaSalle Club
1st place 1996 Silverado 30th Concours d’Elegance
2ndplace 1996 Hillsborough Concours d’Elegance
3rd place 1995 Silverado 29th Concours d’Elegance
2nd place at the 1994 Grand National Seattle Meet
Elwood Hansen award 1996 Hillsborough Concours d’Elegance

Stored indoors and annually serviced, this Cadillac has been regularly maintained and properly detailed to protect and preserve the fine workmanship performed during the award-winning restoration.

General Overview

Today this exceptional Cadillac exhibits all the grandeur of a bygone era combined with contemporary workmanship performed by restoration specialists. The gorgeous blue exterior is highlighted by a bounty of gleaming chrome details which still retain excellent luster despite the passage of time since the restoration was completed. Properly serviced and regularly maintained since the restoration was completed, this Cadillac can be driven with confidence and shown with pride. The paint is smooth and glossy, showing no significant flaws to the finish. The body panels fit very well including all four doors which open and shut with confidence. Hood and trunk also have very good fit to the body panels with easy opening and confident latching. All chrome and stainless trim, emblems, and plastic lenses retain excellent finishes throughout including the gaskets and rubber trim. The stance is poised and purposeful, with limousine-like length, spacious seating, white wall tires, and one of the earliest tailfin fender treatments rising from the chrome taillight bezel. Emblems, lenses, and trim are all in excellent condition, delighting the eye as you view each section of the car. Captivating details continue throughout the exterior including streamlined taillights, impressive grille features, driver’s side spotlight, and innovative disappearing B-post design making the open configuration a smooth and uninterrupted four-door convertible. With the top raised and the windows up, a B-post is inserted to support the expanse of the tan canvas roof. A set of stamped steel wheels finished in bright red with chrome wheel covers wears Firestone 7.00-15 wide white whitewall tires.

Inside the car is a delightful trip down memory lane. The beautifully designed dashboard features integrated instrumentation, a chrome-plated dash panel, and intricate switches and knobs reminiscent of jukebox designs. Instrumentation is nicely laid out with wonderful vintage dials and details, including a movable spotlight mounted at the driver’s side A-post. An ivory steering wheel with matching shift lever knob and chrome horn ring complete the stunning interior. The seats are finished with blue and cream leather which remains supple and soft to the touch. The condition of the interior is stunning from the door panels to the carpeting, and just as the exterior wonderfully trimmed. Even the convertible top has been beautifully restored and remains in excellent condition both inside and out. The glass and surrounding chrome side window trim are also in excellent condition retaining the correct brand etches consistent with original factory glass. The trunk is also exceptionally fine including a correct full-sized spare tire with storage shelf finished with correct carpeting.

Under the hood the engine has been correctly finished and properly detailed. The correct engine paint color, various components, finishes, and wiring have all been tended to with attention to detail and originality in mind. Here too, excellent finishes are present on the inner fenders, cowl, and proper factory markings are also in place. The underside of the car continues to impress as the restoration left no area untended from the multi-leaf rear suspension to the smoothly finished floor, brake lines, and driveline. There are no signs of structural compromise to the frame or suspension mounting points. Every aspect of the undercarriage further validates the awards this car has won and would continue to win at Cadillac events.

The car starts easily and idles smoothly with a quiet purr from the well-balanced V8 engine. The column shifter engages easily and once underway, driving is very pleasant and relaxing. The transmission shifts smoothly, and the brakes stop the car with authority. Road manners are stately and appropriately lofty, as one might expect of a car from this period. Handling is surprisingly good considering the heft and majesty of this car. Much of the driving experience can be best captured with a slower, more reserved perspective, encouraging the more leisurely pace of a bygone era.

This beautifully restored Cadillac follows a long tradition of American luxury offerings that set the standard for excellence in modern cars. Built for prestigious driving and impressively appointed, this Cadillac convertible is ready to impress any onlooker or enthusiast with equal aplomb. Refined and dignified motoring awaits – best of all, it’s a Cadillac.
